Precision & Hornady LNL w/ Rod-type powder?

Hey all,

Saturday afternoon my friends and I were loading .223 (they had Lee type setups, and I have Hornady, so they wanted to just see what the other Red was like), using my Hornady LNL powder thrower. We were using IMR 4064, a powder that I usually do not use.

I was dismayed to see a variance of +/- .5 grains when testing the powder thrower. My friend said it was fine, as he just wanted plinking ammo, but I'm a stickler for precision, and if working up a load, such variance could potentially result in dangerously high pressures.

Is there anything that I can do, short of measuring, modifying, and then dumping the powder into each individual case, to improve the precision of the powder thrower with rod-type powders?

One of the sad facts of powder measures that cost under $200 is that they will throw ball powders with the most accuracy, followed by short cut extruded powder, followed by extruded, and flake powders are thrown with least accuracy.

I load on a progressive and measure every charge of extruded powders, which are intended for bolt weapons. For gas guns I use ball powders and load at fully progressive rates.

Yeah I sorta figured that was the way it was - I normally use ball powders.

At any rate, just for curiosity's sake, what are these >$200 measures that will accurately throw rod/flake powders?

Harrel Measures are used by many bench resters.

But if you want the best, get a Promethius, but they are somewhere over $1200 now
