With the S prefix I will imagine it is an N-frame gun, possibly a 38-44 Heavy Duty or model 20. I have one in nickel with 5 inch barrel. Good shooters and a very stout gun.

I believe some post war K frames also has an S prefix, but I don't know if that number is in the range or not. I may be wrong, but I thought they dropped the V from the M&P serial numbers after the war leaving an S until the C prefix started later. I guess it could be a transition model M&P.

Probably .38 Military and Police (Postwar) aka Pre model 10 with the listed serial number it would date to late-mid 1940's perhaps 1947ish as the "C" prefix began in 1948. I have S909xxx that Mr. Jinks, Historian @ S&W dated to late 1947. They did come in the 5" barrel; measure from the face of the cylinder to the muzzel as it could be a 6" as is mine. Hope this helps. Mine has the smoooooothest action that si as tight as, welllll and breaks like glass. The inside of the frame and sideplate is jeweled.

Value is based on condition, condition, condition and locale and what the fellow who wants to buy it is willing to pay. Mine looks like it layed in the sock drawer and the bluing wore off and that it was hardly ever if ever shot. I paid a $200 and change, then ran out the door. I was pleased as punch. That has been 3 years ago.

Just a recommendation... I would omit the last few digits of your SN when posting it on a public forum. See above.

The N frames used the S prefix from 1946 until 1970 but they never went as high as the number on this gun. The K frame Military & Police (M&P for short) used the S prefix for a couple years after WW II and your gun is one of those.

The 5" barrel (measure from face of cylinder to muzzle) is not rare but less common than the 4" version. Some of the M&Ps made right after the war used pre-war frames and these are called transition models by collectors. If your gun has a dimple under the cylinder release it's a transition gun. The M&P was given the Model 10 designation in 1957.

This is a 5" M&P with the pre-war frame and hammer. The dimple is there and the hammer spur is at the top. On the post war hammers the spur is near the middle.

In addition to what SaxonPig posted, the late "S" model M&P's were indeed called "Transitional" models. They had a unique mix of pre-WWII and post-WWII features. Here's another example below. Probably the most interesting feature is they still retained the pre-war "long action" hammer that was lighter than all post war models (in factory trim/tune). As he pointed out, the high hammer is the give away. Here's one I have that is near yours in production, this is an S934,xxx, 1947. For more details about these, you can search this revolver forum for "Transition" and "M&P" and you will find threads with more detail.

Value is going to be $175 up to maybe $425 based on original condition, grips, etc. Impossible to be more specific without lots of good photos.
