I have a model 686-09, serial number BHF0638 in .357 mag. It is stainless steel with custom grips and . according to the elderly previous owner, was prchased new and was never fired. It is in 100% condition. Any idea of aprox. value?

Check out gunbroker.com you can get a good feel for what they are going for. Plus you may want to put BHF063X for listing your SN in a public forum.

What's the barrel length?
What did you pay for it?
Do you know the retail price he paid?
I'd say $700 pretty easily, but those grips should add to the value.
What type of custom grips?
Got any pictures of this girl?

FYI: All 686's are stainless.
The 2.5 and 3 inch 686's sell for the most. So we need to know barrel length.
Custom grips can be $20 and they can be $200, so we need more details.
Any clean used 686 will be in the $500 range and up depending on the barrel length, grips and also, condition (just because it's never been fired does not mean it's in new condition).
I've seen unfired pitted guns, and unfired guns that have so many scratches from sliding back & forth in a drawer it would make any collector sick.
FYI: Retail price has NO bearing on what a current market value is.

Serial number BHFxxxx should place the gun between March and July 1991, which would be a 686-3. In 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave a value of $500 for as new in the box, but prices are not static. Checking sites such as auctionarms, gunbroker and gunsamerica will give give a better feel for value. Only go on the prices of guns that actually sell, not on the price of guns waiting for a sucker.

The serial number you provided doesn't coincide with a M686-9. Actually there is no M686-9, the Engineering changes only go up to the M686-7. Like said above that serial number would put that revolver made in 1991 and a M686-3. I happen to think the M686-3 is probably the best model even though I own a M686-2.
