I always thought it because big revolvers simply resembled a hogleg. Totin' one all the time on your gunbelt way back then certainly wasn't fun.

The old Peacemaker's grip did resembe the bottom part of a hogs foot as viewed from the side, hence the name. :cool:

Also known as "Plowhandle." Look at an old wooden plow, yep has pistol grips jes like a Colt.
