Grassroots Gun Violence Prevention Organizations to Congress: Stand Up to
the NRA, Protect Our Communities Instead of the Gun Industry
Million Moms and States United Partner to Pressure Congress to Renew and
Strengthen Assault Weapons Ban, and Defeat Immunity Bill for Gun Dealers,
Distributors and Manufacturers
Washington, DC - Organizers of the Million Mom March and States United to
Prevent Gun Violence, the nation's largest umbrella grassroots
organizations devoted to reducing gun violence, partnered today (Thursday)
to pressure Congress to both renew and strengthen the Federal Assault
Weapons Ban (AWB) and vote down a bill that would grant sweeping civil
immunity from liability to gun manufacturers, distributors and dealers.
The AWB, signed by President Clinton in 1994, will expire next year unless
Congress renews it. It prohibits by name the sale of high-powered weapons
such as UZIs, AK-47s and other semiautomatic guns capable of firing more
than ten rounds of ammunition in rapid succession. Despite widespread
support from law enforcement and the public for banning assault weapons
from the civilian market, Congress has been under intense pressure from
the National Rifle Association (NRA) to take no action and thereby let the
current AWB expire.
States United, recognizing that the gun industry cravenly found ways to
get around the AWB, to continue to make and sell military-style assault
weapons in the civilian market, soon after its enactment, called for
renewing and strengthening the AWB through passage of the Lautenberg
(S.1431) and McCarthy/Conyers (HR.2038) bills. The bills would meet the
original intent of the current ban, by effectively banning assault
weapons.
Both activist organizations also strongly oppose S.659, the Gun Industry
Immunity bill disguised as tort reform, which the Senate may be preparing
to vote on within the next few weeks. This abominable legislation,
supported by the NRA, would grant immunity to gun manufacturers,
distributors and dealers from legal action by victims of gun violence.
Organizers pointed out that immunity would even be extended to Bull's Eye
Shooter Supply of Tacoma, WA, the source of the Bushmaster assault rifle
used in the Washington, D.C. sniper attacks. Neither sniper suspect was
legally allowed to buy a gun. Bull's Eye has a history of misconduct,
including having 238 guns missing from inventory during ATF inspections.
Under the proposed legislation, the case against Bull's Eye by relatives
of victims of the sniper attacks would be stopped in its tracks.
Lillian Nolan-Pubillones State Council President of the Million Mom March
of Maryland, said that the National Rifle Association exerts far too much
control over Congress. "We want to let the members of Congress know that
we are watching them closely on these issues. Our ovtes were not for
puppets of the NRA, but for leaders to look out for our families. If our
elected officials want to fall in line for the NRA, then they can watch us
line up advocates and everyday citizens across the country to hold them
responsible. If thousands of deaths every year do not affect their
actions, then surely voting them out of office will."
Carolynne Jarvis, President of States United, said: "We in the grassroots
see the unfortunate effects of members of Congress who look to line the
pockets of the gun industry, instead of saving American families from gun
violence. We call on them to enact the Lautenberg and McCarthy/Conyers
Assault Weapons Bans and to refuse the Gun Industry Immunity bill.
Both States United and Million Mom March organizers pledged to win support
for a stronger and effective Assault Weapons Ban and to defeat the NRA's
effort to reward negligent gun manufacturers and dealers with immunity.
