I would get some aluminum tape and tape off what I dont want black sanding away burn marks would be tough . You can buy this tape in the HVAC section of any hardware store.

I would try a "practice cane" first. Try the burning technique on a piece of wood that wont break your heart if you mess it up.

Why wouldn't black leather dye stain your grips black just as well?

Free hand it with a torch. http://www.taunton.com/CMS/uploadedimages/Images/Homebuilding/Departments/fhb162bs126-04_med.jpg

Get a wood burning kit or friction burn with a rope and lots of sweat.
If wood burning kits aren't available, you can make your own with a piece of rebar and a torch.

A Sharpie or Magic-Marker should work.
Do a test on a scrap piece of wood with the tung oil and make sure it doesn't smear or bleed the black marker into the wood where you don't want it to be.

I just did some nice woodburning with a soldering iron; it worked pretty well. I actually just taped a piece of paper with my desired design onto the wood, and then traced it with the hot iron, burning through the paper and charring the wood at the same time.
