Who has them, how have they held up, how do they shoot?

First, a caveat. Unless you're good at finding small doo-dads and
figuring out where they all go, do NOT remove the grip panels on
a Double Eagle.

That being said, the pistol is actually a very good design, and had it
not tried to jump into an already established market, would have
sold like gangbusters. 15 years too late, Colt. Pay closer attention
in the future. If the pistol had been offered with a Commander-length
slide and barrel, it may have done much better, and a Commander
slide/Officer's Model grip frame would have made a NEAT carry
package.

The two that I've been involved with were reliable, accurate, and
held up well to heavy use. They weren't mine, but a range bud
had one...my step-father the other. I've wrung out both, and
they work.

The advantage of using readily available replacement recoil springs,
magazine, and standard slide parts for the good old Series 80 pistols,
and the recipe is there for a winner. The mag catch and slide stop are
also interchangeable, as is the barrel, link and link pin. The recoil systems
are also identical. Guide rod, plug and barrel bushing.

If I was in the market for a good single-stack, double action .45
auto, I'd jump on one in a heartbeat, and am strongly considering
buying the one from my step-father...mainly because they ain't makin'em
any more.

If you can snag a nice one in the 500-dollar range, think about it.

Cheers!

I shot a DE a long time ago and actually liked it quite a bit. I ended up getting something else and for that particular time was glad I did. If I remember right the DE did quite well when it was 1st released but then got quite a black eye when it was discovered that if dropped and the grip panels broke the gun was out of action due to some spring being held in place by the grips.
The gun was redesigned and I think given the name Double Eagle II. By this time I think what ever momentum the DE had was bogged down. What really peaked my interest was the DE "Police" model that was made (not sure how many were made). It was suppose to be a real shooter. Anyway, I haven't seen one in quite a few years, but if I came across a DE II I'd certainly think about picking it up.
I was just wondering how they've stood the test of time for those who own/shoot them.
Thank you for your reply. If you don't buy step-dad's gun, let me know. :D

They DID make a Commander length Double Eagle.

In fact I almost bought one last month but by the time I got back to the shop with the cash they had sold it.

I see both lengths at the monthly shows here all of the time.

Usual prices around here are around $650 for 99% to NIB.

Where is it?

I've never seen one, and about 99.9% sure I've never heard of
one 'til just now. Ya learn somethin' every day, I reckon.
I'll start a search BluesBear...If there's some out there, one
of'em is bound ta be for sale.

Now...Is that Delta Blues...Chicago Blues...or R&B?

15 years too late, Colt.

Heh.

That phrase has come painfully close to being their epitaph too many times. :uhoh:

I see them for sale all of the time.
All sizes were listed in 1999 Colt Catalogue. I have a copy somewhere around here.

Here's a Commander size Double Eagle (http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=13096297)

Here's an Officers ACP size Double Eagle (http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=13033273)

Now...Is that Delta Blues...Chicago Blues...or R&B?
All of the above. ;) PM me if you'd like a sample.

Double Eagle = factory Seecamp DA converted 1911, sort of.

Lots of 'Neat' factor, thats about it.

Still would like to have one.

The Doubtful Beagle...

Sorry, I've never been impressed.

I've yet to see one with better than barely average accuracy, and more than my fair share of ones with pretty crappy accuracy.

They were overpriced, damned complex, and ergonomically... interesting.

I knew a couple of police officers in Pennsylvania who carried them in .45.

Within 18 months, all had switched back to either revolvers or 1911s.

I had one, it was my first handgun. It was an ok gun accuracy wasn't great. I replaced the barrel with a Bar-Sto barrel and was never happier wuth the result. Sold it when I had to pay for car repairs when I was in college. Never really missed it because then I got into 1911 type pistols.

Over all it was a good gun that I never really had any problems with.
