i have read that remington 700 barrels are junk. the new ones.any i have ever owned have shot great.who has a remington 700 that will not shoot a well worked handload,thanks,keith

It's not just the barrels. Remington quality has dropped considerably in the last 10 years. Yes you can be lucky and still get one that shoots but the odds are that it will be poor. I would never recommend remington to anyone at this time.

As a rule the barrels are reasonably good. They will all shoot to 1.5 MOA with careful handloading IMO.

Some of the best barrels were made by Remington. However, a few years ago they had quality control problems and their 300 Remington Mag was suppose to be a real lemon. If you can get their 5R barrel, that's a keeper.

My older Remingtons shot well (sub 1" MOA) with factory ammo. My .308 LTR and .223 VSS does that too (with factory ammo). Both have their original factory barrel.

I bought a Rem700 take-off in .243 about a year and a half ago to rethread and put on a Turk Mauser receiver ... that one let me shoot prairrie dogs lasered at 250-300 meters pretty regularly in spite of a little breeze when I was visiting in the mid-west. Now those weren't all head shots, but still :cool:

I never have gotten around to taking it out to a range to put groups of holes in paper on a calm day. I know that they aren't ALL bad!

I have been hearing bad things about Remington 700 barrels for over 40 years. In fact the first guy who told me how bad they were just happened to be the Winchester rep. Mine have all shot very well, and in fact Winchesters do, too.
