Transportation Questions

Two quick ones for you:

1. If I'm going to fly with a firearm, how much lead time do I need at the airport to properly clear it with the airline and TSA? I'm used to getting to the airport two hours in advance, but is that enough time?

2. If I happen to be traveling with just ammunition (no firearm itself -- i.e., I happened to buy .380 ammo because I saw it and it's so rare to find that I just had to buy it), do I need to declare it to the airline and TSA if it's in my checked baggage?

Thanks...

Disregard Question #2, just found this thread. (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=465001) It would help to remember to hit the search function first... :o

I would contact the airline before I purchase a ticket to find out the policy. Speak to a supervisor and get names. Ask where on the website you can read and download the regulation. It's really easy to do. :D

Each airline has its own rules, I would check their website and print out the section with the rules to make it flow smoother. Some airports are classified differently and have isolated TSA screening areas that might slow things up. I got bumped on a flight that I allowed two hours lead time....but that was all on US Air. If I had gotten to the counter by an hour and a half before the flight I would have been fine. I would also expect that checking in on a flight in a southern state would go much easier.

when i fly out of Sacramento CA...on Southwest or Continiential...the only time it adds is that i can't check my bags at the curb. you have to go inside and go to the ticket counter.

i've had about the same experience in Columbus OH, Orlando FL, St Louis MO and Nashville TN. i think the longest delay i've ever had was in Houston TX and that only added 20 mins
