Well ....... we had the shoot today, and most enjoyable it was, despite rain coming in for some of the afternoon. Covered firing point etc helped a lot.

David Park came ... he drove up last night and stopped over with me and mine .... and we made a fairly early start at the range ... nice and dry and got in a lot of shooting ....... then Mike Irwin and MTNBKR arrived around midday .. followed by a brief visit from a local buddy of mine and his cop son. They only stayed an hour or so.

And finally .... caseydog arrived ... he found us - at last!!! He brought the rain!! :D

Much shooting was done .... I mean, a LOT considering so few of us. My new ''spinner'' reactive target got thoroughly hammered!!

Of course daylight was shorter so by around 5.00pm I guess, we started packin up and then up to club house to eat what we hadn't devoured at lunchtime!

It was a pity one or two couldn't make it ... I didn't hear back from a few either way but, never mind. Whilst only a small group, we had (I think) a great session.

My thanks to the guys who came from so far - and hope they got back safely, despite some foggy conditions coming in with the rain. .... and also to my wife Bonnie for catering for us. A few pics then ... to share the flavor of the day .........

The benches tended to get sorta - cluttered ....... :)

And .... more cluttered!!

MNTNBKR gave his 6.5mm a lot of excercise!

Took the chrono ..... ''in case''. In fact we made quite good use of it.

Mike's turn this time ..... just caught a dirt splash behind it ..... it was not actually all that easy to hit, every time!

I said it took a hammering!!!! :D ........ :rolleyes: ........

There you have it ..... thanks again to the guys who came ..... made a great day. I hope perhaps to fix something for Spring time but - that's a long ways away and .... quite a lot of gun cleaning time too!

Well ,better late than not at all :D Chris (P95) was a great host and even with the rain I had a good time. Chris introduced me to his Taurus .454 and Contender and both surprised me pleasantly , Mike gave me a go at his S&W 58 and P7 (sweet guns , especially that P7). The spinning target was a hit and it did get hammered , the CD shoot was also a hit. I took a sixpack of revolvers and the only disappointment (and mild embarrasment) was the new load for the 696 which wouldn't come up to POA with the sight bottomed out:banghead:

Mike , Chris and David it was good to meet you, I hope you got out safe under the fog , I sure had to swim through some soup till I got up on a mountain.
I Hope we can do it again sometime, perhaps without the rain.

Chris , Thanks for an enjoyable Sunday afternoon, we'll have to find the time to shoot together some more since we aren't too far apart, I can see some groundhogs falling next summer to a couple handrifles

:evil:

I made it back in good time, despite the weather and heavy traffic. Now I need to clean my guns, but I think I'll go to sleep and do it tomorrow. :D

Chris, thanks again for your hospitality.

we'll have to find the time to shoot together some more since we aren't too far apart, I can see some groundhogs falling next summer to a couple handrifles I'll drink to that buddy ...... indeed! Seeing as we are pretty local .... stay in touch and we'll get some shooting sometime .. you can even invite me up to your local place sometime ... !!

Damn ... forgot to report on the CD's ... hahaha! ..... for those not sure what the hell we are taking about ....... I went thru a vast amount of old CD's ... all in fact data CD's ... much was ''free on line time'' stuff ... need I say more!! We scattered these on the berm and had one hell of a good plinking session .... mostly with FAL, L1A1, SKS, 6.5mm etc..... oh, and Mikes Enfield .. with the dicky bolt!!

Ya know what Ray ... all the damn time my AK was sittin in front of truck ... damn! Did mean to hose the berm a bit with that too! Plumb forgot it.

Yep .. great day.:)

Chris, thanks again for your hospitality. My pleasure David and .. great to meet y'all. Glad journey home was a safe one. :)

later......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Edit to add ....... cos forgot.......
Got to try out the CZ-52 today for first time ........... I Like it! :evil: Great gun and to me ... not in least uncomfortable to shoot .. and hold feels good. I hope to load for this soon and experiment a bit.
Also got to test out my Bersa Thunder .. is that ever a sweet lil gun! Enjoyed that.
Odd thing tho ... used some ''Brown Bear'' FMJ's and that shot reasonably POA .. but also have some JSP rounds (Dynamit Nobel) and these suckers shot left!! By a coupla inches at least. Really not sure why such a difference.
Oh and, in fact .. it was also first time I'd really played properly with the T/C Contender . I do like that! It's in .223 and with American eagle factory was doin OK ...... Mike score a hit at 100 yds on a CD!! So did someone else..... Ray i think.
Hi Chris,
I've been to Pa. twice over the last 3 years. My friends live in Clearville
(~ S. central Pa.), where are ya'll? (I'm in east Tx.)
Been thinking about moving up there for quite some time. Not used to the cold season there, but could do away with the Summer here.
How's the politico climate in Pa.?
Many thanks,
Bob
Hey Bob!!!
Clearville?? .. sounds like Fulton County ...... next to the East of me, in Bedford County. Nice place overall.
''Politico'' ...... not too bad .. considering we get labelled NE a lot! Down here tho we are not so far really from Mason Dixon line and i think we feel an allegiance with VA etc!!
Yeah ..... winter can get pretty bleak and even here summer can be way hot and sweaty! But ... '' shall issue'' here ...... good hunting .... and (to me) very beautiful scenery .. I love it.
There are IMO many worse places you could relocate to.
PM me if you want anything researched..... if I can help that is.
Yup, we had a real good time thanks to Chris (P95) and everyone else who showed up. The best part was the variety of firearms there.
The only downside was the rain and fog on the way back. Mike and I got back ok, but it was a bit longer than the trip up.
We gotta do this again!
Glad you got back safe guys ...... not I am sure the most pleasant of drives with conditions closed in as they were. Sorry about that ....... as ever, one of the factors outside of our control.
More gun cleaning today ..... :( ..... but hey ..... well worth it!:)
To top it off, I broke my sectional cleaning rod last night cleaning the No. 1.
Sigh.
I was camping with my family this weekend and couldn't make it.
Next time!
I don't know if I can hang around Mike Irwin again. Last time I hung out with him I had to go out and buy an S&W Model 19.:D
Its kinda funny when I look at these pictures............
I see a bunch of handguns I have shot at previous gatherings. I don't buy guns unless I've had experience with them and learn a bit about them before buying. When I look at the guns I own now I think about who influenced me in getting them:
Mike Irwin - Model 19
David Park - Sig 239
You should definitely be glad that you weren't at this shoot then, Soda...
Dave had is Kahr P9. Very nice little gun.
I had my P7 PSP and my Browning Hi Power...
MTNBKR had his Star BM (one HELL of a lot of gun for $150, if you ask me!)
And P95 had a lot of neat stuff, including a Taurus Raging Lunatic in .454... :D
October 27, 2003, 11:59 AM
What are the two guns at 4 and 5 o'clock behind the spotting scope?
I told Dave I didn't buy the Kahr for CCW because I hadn't fired one before.
If he only got one sooner......:)
What are the two guns at 4 and 5 o'clock behind the spotting scope? Soda ... that bench was mostly my clutter:p
4 o'clock ... that'll be the Bursa Thunder and .... 5 o'clock ...... pretty sure that was the Browning HP practical. They both are duo-tone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Taurus Raging Lunatic haha! You may be well pooped Mike but your humor has survived!!:D Sorry about the cleaning rod ... I've bust them before on some of my longarms ... need to find something stronger .... hmmm .... new thread here.

I was using a cheap ??? aluminum rod to push a patch on a cleaning jag. Not the best choice, but I can't find my sectional steel rod.

I was in the shower this morning, and I for the life of me couldn't figure out why my shoulder was all red...

Then it dawned on me, over 100 rounds through an SKS, and about 25 through the .303...

Sorry I couldn't make it guys. Family thing with my little brother. For years my brother has made a "pilgrimage" to Busch Gardens Williamsburg this time of year (either the last weekend of the season or a week or two prior). Some neat Halloween stuff as well as the last chance of the year to do the rides. For years he's tried to get me to go. I told him a couple years ago that if he ever went on Sunday instead of Saturday (he isn't religious) I'd go. Well, he decided about 2 weeks ago that this year it would be yesterday. He specifically made it a Sunday so I could go. Anyway, I was kind of stuck. Well, it was a ton of fun (I'm a roller coaster junkie) but I was also sad I couldn't be shooting with you guys. I thought about you several times during the day. I'm glad it went well. Hopefully, I can be there next time. If anyone sort of nearby wants an informal shoot some Sunday let me know and I'll try to clear my schedule.

Oh, while I did email Chris I didn't want to post a "can't make it" on the thread. I have the feeling that the more "can't make it's" on a thread the more people who are on the fence end up not going. It makes it look like there won't be that many people there so if someone isn't sure they are less likely to go, while if there are a bunch of "I'll be there's" it gives the impression that there'll be a crowd and worth their while.

Edited due to stupid spelling error- reminder to ALWAYS proffread, rpofraead, profred, argh proofread the darn thing! :D

Sorry you couldn't make it Chaim .... quite understand. Anaother time hopefully.

MTNBKR .... a question ....... I forgot to ask you again re that red MTM thing you have ... what is its name/designation?? .. I must find one of those ... VERY useful for range trips.

mtnbkr
October 27, 2003, 02:25 PM
It's the MTMCase-Guard Site-In-Clean Rest. You can usually find it in places like Wal-Mart for less than $30.

Chris

Mike Irwin
October 27, 2003, 02:34 PM
Am I the only one who finds the MTM annoying in that as you try to settle in and get to a comfortable position with a rifle it keeps slipping farther and farther into the "forks" and gets stuck?

I would much rather have 2 padded "U"s on which to rest the rifle...

P95Carry
October 27, 2003, 02:54 PM
Chris ... thx for the reminder on that ... i will get one I think.... also have seen they do a small pistol one ..... which might be handy too.

Mike ..... I know what you mean re the ''forks'' .... cos I tried my full size MTM gun cleaning thing as a rest at the range once (too awkward to tote tho every time) ...... however .. that is easily solved if you add a sandbag to front and rear ..... I have a coupla small sand or bean bags somewhere ... which will probably take care of that.

It annoys me too, but it's great for working on the gun or cleaning it. I wonder if putting a rag at the bottom of the "V" would help...

I have a wooden clamp-type device (padded jaws, not unlike a Jorgensen clamp) grab the buttstock) for cleaning. I doubt that it would work for shooting, though.

I would like to have gone but a 7 1/2 hour drive would be too much for this busy college student. Maybe next spring there will be a THR meet in New England or eastern N.Y. :cool:

David Park
October 27, 2003, 04:31 PM
Mike, my Kahr is a PM9. It's like the P9 but smaller. :cool: I think it's different enough from the SIG P239 that I'm happy owning and carrying both (maybe even at the same time!).

Soda, I got the 239 after trying Mal H's at the first TFL meet I attended. I also really like Mal's Blackhawk in .45 Colt. :)

I liked trying the .454 and the PSP, but I still don't quite understand the appeal of H&K. If I was going to buy an ugly Germanic gun, I'd get a Glock.
*running for cover*

Mike Irwin
October 27, 2003, 04:36 PM
Just as I don't understand the appeal of the 239. Of all the SIG guns, it's the one for which I have absolutely zero affinity.

I'd much rather have a 228 or 225.

Sorry I had to miss out too guys. Had a pair of nephews(they're twins) birthday to attend and since both my parents and my in-laws live in the same area we played musical relatives for the weekend. I did get to have a first for shooting though, ended up going out to my parents farmland to shoot some clay pigeons for the first time with a future(?) brother in-law. Of course like everything else associated with shooting it's gotten me hooked and now I have to look for a good place to shoot some in MD.

Ok, now I know who to blame.:D

Mike, the Sig 228 is the #1 gun on my list if the AWB expires. I recently found out that Sig isn't marketing the Sig 228 to the public anymore. You gotta buy them used or get one thats been sitting on a shelf somewhere.Sig 228 not being marketed to the public (http://www.thefiringrange.com/forum/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=1&TopicID=1248&PagePosition=1)

Sorry to miss this one guys. The wife (Mrs.Woody6) and I had a CPR certification course to attend on Friday thru Sunday afternoon.

Now we are American Red Cross Certified Instructors.

I figured SOMEBODY needs to be on the medical side of the house for all of the shoots that happen between PA and Jersey!

The wife and I will try to make the next one.

:rolleyes: Soda? When are you having one at W&W? :rolleyes:

I would like to think I may manage to fix a Spring shoot .... so if that comes to pass, there'll be notice given again as before.

Congrat's on your successful certification.:)
