Which 9mm?

Well here goes a somewhat silly question. I shoot at an indoor range that goes out to 25 yards. I have several Colt .45s (SCGC)that are extremely accurate and they have spoiled me terribly. When I go to the range I shoot my "defensive guns" for practice and reliability testing but then out come what I call my "target" guns and then the fun starts.

I would like a 9mm that shoots as accurate as my 45s (well, if I mentally focus, I can shoot the Glock 17CC pretty good but I want a SA trigger like my 45s).

Although I don't have many 9mms left, here's the ones that I have for range use (not defensive use):
Glock 17CC
SIG P220 9mm (just came in, will pick up Sunday, shoot Monday)
Beretta INOX Brig (selling it)
Sphinx Police Special (not really a target gun, fixed sights, shortened slide, etc).

So.....I've considered the following so far:
SIG P210-6 (ouch)
SIG P226 Stainless Sport Stock (special order)
S&W PC 952 (half the price of the SIG P210)
STI ??
Browning HP Practical

I'd love any suggestions you may have. I prefer stainless/hard chrome finish (non-black/blue) but will obviously consider any finish at this point. I'm growing tired of "churning" guns (although I do that pretty well) and would like to buy a 9mm that just floats my boat. So far I've been disappointed in all of the ones I've purchased (Sphinx excluded but they aren't really a target gun).

Thanks so much.

My blue P226 will shoot as well as a Sport model, why not try a standard P226?

Perhaps you should try a CZ75b .. I have tried a few different
makes and models and have settled on the CZ and the 1911..
I have the CZ75b but if you want just single action that is available also..Triggers are not bad out of box and they get better
after a bit of use..Accuracy wise they are excellent, all of mine shot cast bullets very good and when I went to plated and FMJ
things got better,if that was possible..Only switched because of the cleanup after the cast bullets.. I have 9mm in the 1911's also
along with 45 and 38 super and a Ciener conversion kit but the CZ's get more range time..
Try one and see but be warned that they are adictive..One is not enough..

I recommend STI Trojan for an accurate 9mm in 1911 flavor. I have shot one and I'm truely impressed. I find Metalform mags to be the most reliable. Good luck!

I know this one will not thrill you, but my little Sig 239 has really surprised me with the accuracy it displays. I bought this little jewell only as a compact carry gun, but the more I shoot it, the more I'm impressed with how well it can be used on just about any imaginable target at 25 yards. I just closed the safe up for the night 5 minutes ago, and the thought ran throgh may head that I have NEVER owned an auto that can give my S&W revos a run for thier money! I'm somewhat of an outdoorsman, and in the past, a S&W 16 .32 mag or an 18 .22LR would accompany me, but lately, the 239 has been going with me. At least in my mind, that says a lot for an auto.

Only one man's opinion, but I think it deserves a look.

Good luck.

Great comments so far.

I've had several CZs including CZ85 Combat. Sold them for other things but may reconsider the CZ85 again. It was a nice shooting gun.

I've had a P226 also but once again sold it for something else. I didn't have it long enough to remember how accurate it was. I'll rent one and see how I do with it. Of course my P220 9mm may be just fine but I won't be able to shoot it (for the first time) until Monday. Maybe I won't need another 9mm after all!!!

Will go to the SVI/STI sites and read the posts about the Trojan. I've had 2 VIPs in .38 super and they were great (surprise surprise....I sold them too.....see what I mean about "churning").

Thanks for all the input.

If your even considering a 210-6 that means you can afford it..if you can afford it and dont buy it your making a mistake...its the ultimate 9mm

For prestige and combat the SIG 210 is the way to go. For shear combat the SIG 226 is it.

Take this for what it is worth as I am a SIGAHOLIC.

All will serve you just fine and I don't think there is a bad choice in the lot.

MY vote is still SIG 210 because it is single stack and I want one. How is that for an unbiased suggestion.

Well, now I just don't know. Just purchased another Colt last night and another 9mm may have to go on hold. I know I listed the P210 but that doesn't mean that I had the cash (was thinking about putting it on a CREDIT CARD

I'll take another trip to the range with my P220s (9mm and .38 super, when they both come in to my FFL ) and see what I can do.

Thanks for all the great responses.

Browning Hi-Power or one of the FEG HP clones.

Browing Highpower or if you like 1911's Nowlin makes a very reliable 9mm.

I second the Browining Hi Power, CZ-75/85 or a 1911 in 9MM. I've heard a lot of great comments about the STI 9MM longslide.

I have owned and shot dozens of handguns of all sorts over the past 35 years, and IMHO nothing equals my USP Tactical .45.

My wife has a USP Compact 9mm, and it is great also, but the trigger and adjustable sights on the Tactical, which are available in 9mm as well, may be more to your liking.

Other than that, I think I like my 1966 vintage Browning Hi-Power. It is just a great pistol.

Or wait for the new P226ST, with the stainless frame. I love the 226, as wel as most SIG designs. Am waiting impatiently for the 226ST. The added weight should make it quicker on the fly, as I've noticed a considerable difference in my second-shot follow ups between the 220ST and the standard 220.

Greetings,
Everything on your wish list looks great. Consider a FEG-9P.
Have put over 1,000 rounds through mine with no feed problems except a little sluggishness after 200 rounds in one session. This was mostly due to getting dirty. The finish is as good as FN-HP.
Removal of the mag safety greatly improves the trigger pull. Groups of three inches at 25 yards with factory set sights with cheap ammo.

Good shooting,

Doug

There are plenty of HK P9Ss floating around from $600 to $1000. Accuracy second to only the 210. Also, the fixed barrel Benelli B76S is also supposed to match accurate and several are offered on gunsamerica for under $600.

A full sized Walther P88 is also supposed to be very accurate.

I love the P9S.

Have you shot a P7M8 before?

I would like a 9mm that shoots as accurate as my 45s

I want a SA trigger like my 45s

With those requirements in mind, in order of price (Hi-Lo):

SIG P210 (probably more accurate & nicer trigger than anything you own)
HK P7M8 (triggers can be kind of mushy, but light & the gun is very accurate)
STI Trojan (that nice 1911 trigger, very accurate)
Browning HiPower (needs trigger job to be as good as average 1911)
CZ-75/-85B (same as above)

Go for the P210. I shoot mine at 3" steel plates at 25 yards. I have to back up to 35 yards to have any hope of missing. It is the ultimate range gun. You can even make 100 yard shots with it, it is a short rifle.

How is that Sig 210 anyway, is it like the P7: if you have to ask, you wouldn't understand?

Sean Smith
January 20, 2003, 12:19 PM
Well, the SIG P210 is possibly the most accurate, tightest, smoothest, most reliable 9x19mm handgun in existence, with the best single-action trigger you may find anywhere... including expensive 1911s. Of course, the prices range from high ($1,000 for a super-duper deal on a used basic model) to psychotic (about $4,000 for the most expensive variant new in the box  ). They make a P7 seem like a crude lump of pig-iron by comparison... and P7s are nice.

Downsides? Aside from price? Hammer bite. Magazines are expensive as hell and only hold 8 rounds. Eurotrash magazine release.

Value is relative, but for the $1,500 you can expect to spend if you shop around a bit, they are much better quality than a semi-custom 1911 at the same price point in my opinion. And they will last pretty much forever.

I had to sell mine, and unless I find a deal I can't refuse, I probably won't get another one. But if you want the best 9x19mm gun there is, there is the P210, and then there is everything else.

Well I purchased a SIG P210-6 a few hours ago. :D Will go to the range sometime this week and post a range report. I haven't had hammer bite from any of my other guns, including a Browning HP Practical, so I'm hoping that won't be a problem. Dealer was out of extra mags so I'll still have to spring for a couple of those. Euro mag release is stiff but really not a problem since I'm used to them (I have several other SIGs with the euro release, although they are not stiff like the P210).

My indoor range only goes to 25 yards so I'd like to go to an outdoor range to see what I can do at further distances.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I've had so many of the 9mms that were suggested that I thought I'd just go with the P210 and if that doesn't satisfy me then I'm a lost cause!!!

I would go CZ first, followed by the SIG.
The BHP is well known for reliability, but in my experience their triggers suck.
If you like the 1911 trigger pull, odds are against the P-35.
The other two may put your 1911's to shame.
