I like the lynching noose in the tree.
Notice how gun owners are stereotyped here: noose, gaudy pick-up, broken window, bullet holes in the house, beer gut, Micky Mouse ears, rat on the porch.

The noose hanging in the tree is what pisses me off. I don't mind somebody calling me a gun nut because I like guns, in fact it makes me smile. :D However, I am liable to punch a man for telling me that gun owner = racist. Damn propagandists.

October 27, 2003, 02:03 AM
Forquidder got there first.

I was gonna say look how this guy ties in pick-up owners, trailer homes, gun and racism (and patriotism - see the American flag). If you're any of these, in this guy's mind, you're probably another. After all, gun owners are poor, uneducated, racist, out-of-control, xenophobic, blindly patriotic, yadda-yadda-yadda.

Still, I wouldn't get too mad. I've seen a few unintelligent posts here and there about the antis, that, were the same individuals to spout off to the cartoonist or authors of these cheap shots at the NRA, gunowners and the 2nd amendment, it would only serve to make the majority of us look bad. The only folks who should be responding to these guys are the ones with thick skin who don't let their dander get the best of them.

My non traceable ammo gets traced by my tracer ammo.

Political cartoons are satire. Like other satire, they tells us as much about the artist as the subject. I'm feeling a bit of a sting, but it is offset by my laughter at the artist's ignorance.

Gotta agree with RocketMan & XavierBreath: sure, my initial reaction is one of anger, but garbage like this says everything about the ignorance and bigotry of the cartoonist (and the paper that prints such trash) and nothing about me... about us - the kind of folks who make up THR. The shoe doesn't fit... I'm not even trying it on. So what's to get steamed about? We know who we are - this fool clearly does not.

It's obvious to even the most casual observer how widely this guy missed the mark in his depiction of the "typical" gun-owner... he forgot the "Stars and Bars" in the back window of the pickup :D

The problem with cartoons like this is that 1) They get the attention of those who otherwise don't know the issues and couldn't care less if they did; 2) the sheeple believe it and 3) the sheeple outnumber us about a 100 to 1.

I'd like to e'mail the author or snail mail him and respond to the blatantly incorrect stereotype he portrayed with some demographic statistics regarding gun owners. I bet he'd be surprised - or maybe not - he just wants to get rid of guns - he's obviously not concerned with fact or truth.

Anyone know how to contact the guy?

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Media Consolidation! Get ready to see this sort of elitist drivel on a daily basis in your own local rag.

The "Indianapolis Star" used to have a relatively balanced, rational editorial policy when it was still Pulliam family owned. You had columns from the usual gang of Urban Lefty Elitists, but they were side-by-side with the Conservative viewpoints of William Safire, Walter Williams, George Will, William F. Buckley, etc.

Gannett bought them out a couple of years ago, and began replacing the managerial staff with Politically Correct corporate drones. Since Barbara Henry was installed as President and Publisher, the entire "Opinion" (Editorial) section now displays all the balance of a DNC fundraising party.

The only time you'll ever see anything from anyone on the other side of the political spectrum is when and if they post a column which criticizes some facet of the current Administration's policy. Occasionally, we'll see something from Michelle Malkin but only if she's on one of her "Another INS Failure" rants. Jeez! Even Gary Varvel's cartoons have changed radically in tone and content.

Now that the way is clear for virtually every non-internet news outlet in the country to come under the control of one of the five or six members of the Media Cartel, BOHIC(A)!

Without the first THE people can't spout off on rooftops, in editorials or via cartoons.

Anti-gun bigots like this ‘artist' have to spout propaganda because they simply lack the ability to engage us in calm, logical debate. Their lack of substantial evidence compared to what we can present in an argument makes trying to win the hearts and minds of the general populace through intelligent discussion the equivalent of trying to shoot with an empty chamber; they have no ammo. Emotional trash like this is their only option.

Unfortunately, their audience is all too often willing to accept what they are told with no questioning what-so-ever. :(

clem
October 28, 2003, 09:03 PM
And the artist's reply:

"Well,
I was a member of the NRA,
My father is a retired colonel USAF,
and my best friend is a police officer.

None of this takes away from the fact that we have too many guns in the
society and that gun ownership comes with responsibility. The NRA believes that we
should have guns at any price, despite the fact that gun related deaths
increase every year...I think the NRA's attitude of "we have nothing to do with
this" as being quite irresponsible"

Then I ask him:

And this makes you?????????????

And he replyed again:

"it makes me a citizen who has the right to criticize an organization like the
NRA who I feel could be more responsible with regard to guns and the
violence and death that result in their misuse."

I grow weary of these idiots.

Moparmike
October 28, 2003, 09:58 PM
Restricting the law-abiding citizens from having guns or other objects because criminals misuse the guns is not the right correct thing to do. Increasing the number of law-abiding citizens properly educated to do so is the correct thing to do, and also the goal of the NRA.

I would love to write this guy, but it would only serve to annoy me further at his lack of knowledge of the truth.

Don Gwinn
October 28, 2003, 10:32 PM
Would someone please ask him (or tell me) what is the propaganda significance of the Mickey Mouse Ears? Is that some kind of grave liberal insult, or something?

I've experienced that before. A vegan college professor once called me a killer carnivore, and I'm pretty sure she thought that would hurt my feelings.

PAshooter
October 29, 2003, 08:21 AM
The cognitave dissonance exhibited by these people is a never-ending source of amusement for me.

Picture this: a pair of black muslim thugs go on a killing spree in and around our nation's capital.

If I use this incident to characterize all law-abiding black people as sub-human criminals I'm a bigoted racist.

If I use this incident to charactize all law-abiding white gun owners as sub-human criminals I'm making valid political commentary.

To make either generalization is clearly seen for what it is by all those capable of rational thought: ignorant and repulsive.

Welcome to the world of PC - where rational thought is given no quarter.

Actually, ammo registration could be used as a keep-BATFE-buried-in-paperwork tactic. Of course, then Congress might just “defund” the registration process, effectively blocking all ammunition sales.

Dear Sir!
An American associate of mine has provided me with a link to your cartoon.
I have to say that I do not agree - in fact strongly disagree with the message. You have tried to create a strange association between the NRA and some "souther-pickup-driving-violent-racist" image. You have also tried to create an association between gun ownership and violence. Well, I live in a country where private ownership of weapons is almost outlawed, and let me tell you this: First of all, you're wrong -there's no scientifically proved connection between America's comparatively liberal gun laws and violence. Second, your cartoon is absolutely distasteful. Not because I agree or disagree with it, but because it attempts to generate hatred towards a group because of their belief, and this is the kind of thing my ancestors have become, unfortunately, too familiar with.

P.S.I'm a supporter of the U.S. Second Amendment, and I wish my country had one.
