When to use a cannelure?

I was looking at some 110gr V-max bullets that were offewred w/or without cannelure. When would the cannelure be needed? These bullets would be used in a 6.8spc.

My deer load for my 308 loves Hornady 165 gr BTSP and they have a cannelure, but for my rifle theyre in the wrong place-about 1/8th of an inch too far up the bullet. The only time I use a cannelure is when loading for my 357

They have no cannalure because there is no valid reason to crimp them in that round.

some bullet designs use a cannelure as a method to secure the lead core to the jacket to avoid seperation. (this may be the reason the slug you have is cannelured)
sometimes it is used as a means to secure the slug into the brass case when crimped - avoid 'setback' or loosening during recoil, such as many .357 mag slugs.
sometimes it's designed to keep the slug from moveing when the round is fired if loaded with a heavy charge of slow powder, this allows pressure to build up to optimum burn rate. this is usually the big game slugs in heavy rifles and some target rounds.
several different reasons.
myself I use the Lee FCD on slugs w/out canneleure - just a light squeeze to be sure.
IMO if the slug has a cannelure and the loaded, crimped round is within correct OAL then it should be crimped into the groove.
maybe a call to the bullet maker's tech line could provide you with some tips on selection for your intended purpose.

Hornady offers some of the .224" and .277" V-Max with cannulure so they can be crimped for use in semi-auto rilfles like the AR-15.
Prior to the 6.8 SPC, there was not much call for cannulured .270 varmint bullets, and they didn't offer them.
As there was no need to crimp them in a bolt-action .270.
