My dad gave me his H&R model 949 .22 lr revolver. It was a relatively recent purchase on his part, so I hadn't so much as handled it before. And it turns out that my dad never fired it before either. So, neither of us could figure out the following:

Is this weapon supposed to have a DA/SA firing system? If so, something is wrong with mine. It will only fire in the DA mode and the hammer cannot be manually cocked. If this is normal I find it quite odd that they designed a miniature Colt SAA but made it DAO.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Join the crowd....I have one of these from many years ago. Looks great with target grip etc. It light strikes 3 or 4 shots out of each loaded cylinder.
Ammo makes no difference. I have fiddled and fiddled tyring to get it going.

Since it only costs about $100, I have assigned it as a 3rd string plinker.
Only I shoot it.

There is a small part, called the "sear" located at the top/rear of the trigger guard (or at least they're should be). It is pushed by a little coil spring, and these two parts hold that hammer at full-cock when you pull it back to shoot in the single-action mode. If there parts are missing or damaged the single-action feature won't work.

Give your gun a "look-see" and if you still can't figure out what the trouble is you need to take it to a qualified gunsmith.

There was a small plastic part that was attached to the top of the rod that sits inside the mainspring. It was broken in half. I tried removing the loose piece and after reassembly, the weapon works as intended in both DA and SA mode. It appears, however, that there may not be enough force behind the hammer in SA mode due to the missing few millimeters of plastic from the end of the rod. I'll have to test it out at the range to find out.

You are likely right about the broken part. A new one can be obtained from the Numrich/Gun Parts Corp. You will find them at: www.e-gunparts.com
