They've got one of these babies at a pawn shop down the road. 12 gauge pump. Are these quality guns?

That's a good price for a great gun.

I like this over the mossberg I was looking at because the Winchester is A WINCHESTER and it's got a longer barrel which makes for better hunting right?

Even if it shows some use, that is a good price.

the Winchester is A WINCHESTER
This doesn't really hold true anymore. Winchester is just a name that FN sells to whomever wants to produce a "Winchester." Currently FN is producing its own Winchester Model 70s in SC. I'm not sure if anyone is making Winchester shotguns at the moment.
The 1300s generally have a good reputation, but you may have a problem finding parts for it, or other barrels. Be sure to check the magazine tube to be sure that it has not been permanently crimped to be bird-legal at only 2 shells. Longer barrels are usually used for hunting, and newer ones have screw-in chokes. An older gun will have a fixed-choke barrel.
(I have never dealt with a 1300, only the 1400 semi-auto which I did not have a good experience with on several levels. I couldn't even say for sure if the 1300 and 1400 were made by the same companies.)

Not if you really want a semiauto carbine... you already have a shotgun, right?
Seriously- a hundred bucks here, a hundred bucks there, and before long there's enough for that Stag lefty AR.
Yeah, yeah- bad influence, I know.

The Winchester 1300 has been around since the early 80's. I don't believe any of the 1300 Field guns were fixed choke as were some of the early 1200's. Does it have the screw-in Win-choke tubes? Winchester was I believe the first major manufacturer to offer screw-in choke tubes as standard in a shotgun. Before that the only way to get multiple choke capability in a shotgun was to get it modified to take the Briley choke tubes or a Poly-Choke or Cutts Compensator type of choke tube system.
If it has the Win-Choke tube system that is a plus as you can still find the extra choke tubes.

I believe the Ranger models had a shorter stock than the standard 1300s.

The ranger was just a birch stocked economy model. It shot well, fit the same, functioned the same. I have a 1400 (auto) Ranger and love it even though I much prefer the ergos of the Mossberg. The Winchesters are the only shotguns I've ever picked up that fit me absolutely perfect right out of the box. That and its reliability are why I like the 1400. The crossbolt safety really puts me off sometimes being a lefty.
I fit my Mossberg to me and prefer it, frankly, to the 1300 Winchesters, but if you like the 1300, it's a very good pump gun for hunting. If you want it, that's a decent price and I'd jump on it assuming it's in good shape. Might wanna make sure the choke screws in and out. Some owners neglect their guns. Choke tubes should be lubed with a dab of gun grease now and then to prevent 'em seizing up.
BTW, I'm not sure, but I think the SX3 is in production? Maybe not, but I was thinking so.
Also, hey, Mossberg is all American even if it don't have the Winchester name! In fact, the Maverick factory is in Texas! Even our Armed Forces use the Mossberg. Heck, if ya wanna be patriotic....I'm just sayin'. :D

I own 2 1300's. A Defender with the short barrel that's the same length as the magazine tube. GREAT looking gun! GREAT shooting gun! Fastest pump action of ANY SG I've ever fired. Feels solid and swings better than any SG I've ever shot. Same is tru for my other 1300 that I bought at a local pawn shop for 250. It's a hunter, has the longer barrel and swings as good, shoots as good and is a great SG.
Where is this pawn shop located? I want to be there tomorrow morning to buy it out from under you!
It's a fantastic deal forn well under 200 bucks jump on that SG YESTERDAY!!

I'll be the voice of the contrary here, and suggest that a used Mossy or 870 would be a better choice. I just can't get past how Winchester used plastic bits in (what I feel to be) critical areas of the design.
I can usually find clean used 870 Express models and 500s for $150-$175, so that's where I'd put my money.
