(MN) Barenaked Ladies @ Orpheum - Should I carry?

I just fell into a pair of tickets... yay!

The venue is in downtown Minneapolis -- you will find many more wretched hives of scum and villiany, but still, one must be cautious.

From the venue:
The Historic Orpheum Theatre is a gun-free facility. Historic Theatre Group prohibits weapons in or on our Theatre grounds.

Too bad they don't control the streets and parking ramps, too!

The question: Does the Orpheum use metal detectors? Does the band or tour promoter?

Any info appreciated.

I have to deal with this stuff all the time. I use to work in the music industry and was in bars and clubs all the time.

Use your head and fists if you can't CCW.

Car keys can be as good as a knife if you know how to use them.;)

I think I should call the venue, ask for the security director, and ask whether they have lockboxes to secure my firearm.

No? How about an escort from my car to the venue? No? Gee, thanks for caring.

It's not so much that they want to disarm me at the show -- it's the dark alleys between the show and the car.

That goes for all the major sports venues, too.

Whew. I thought it was some sort of play and that Mpayne was fearful that the actresses would throw themselves at him. ;)

Mpayne was fearful that the actresses would throw themselves at him.
Well, that happens all the time. But I'm always "packing" for that emergency!

I'm pretty sure (but, IANAL) that if they catch you the worst they can do is ask you to leave. If you don't they can get you for trspassing, but there is no law preventing you from packing even though it is a ;gun-free' facility. Whatever that is.

I worked in the music biz for years. Everywhere I went was prohibited. I would never even think of packing where they told me not too. That's just crazy talk.

That is correct in MN.

I'd just rather know whether I'll be caught before I try it. :)

I've been to a few heavy metal/hard rock shows in Ohio and have never been through a metal detector. I have been patted down, though.

Be advised, Barenaked ladies are severely ANTI. Heard them on a radio show a few years ago and they were spouting off the usual ignorance.

At first I thought you meant the Orpheum in Boston -- I'd have advised no, because I saw the Tango here and they actually checked all the ladies' purses....

If you don't have to worry about this or any alarms -- I'd say carry.

Yeah, well.

A guy learns to act or sing (or not) and all of a sudden he's an expert on the world's troubles.

I thought that's what 22 mini revolvers were for.;)

We went to see Chicago at the Colorado State fair this year. and I went toolless cuz I figured of course there'd be security. I could've carried a Desert Eagle, suitcase nuke, or worse, a camcorder!:D

They wuz good.

Actually now that I think about it, a little mini revolver might be more tactically sound than a full size hose in that enviroment. If you have any real trouble it's going to be in your face, and with all them people around you couldn't let one shot go astray. Fists even better maybe.

You might run by the venue one night and look over the security. Some places have airport-style metal detectors; others frisk you at the door.* Many concert halls have no security at all.

If the door security isn't an issue, I see no reason not to carry.

- Chris

* - The one time I was frisked before entering a concert, the search was so cursory as to be pathetic. I could have snuck a full-stocked Remington 870 past that dweeb.

Well, I do use a SmartCarry. I don't think many security goons at concerts have the nerve to feel up people's crotches.

If they use gates or wands, I'm sunk. Oh, why oh why didn't I get one of those all-plastic guns? :D

If one knew they were going to be patted down and had a large trucker's or biker's style wallet and also a thin weapon such as a Kel-Tec P-32 or a Spyderco Police folder. One of those weapons could somehow find it's way into the afor mentioned wallet and could possibly be missed in a cursory patdown.

Note: remove most of the wallet junk except CCW and ID, carry cash in a money clip.

Not a bad plan. Unfortunately, I don't own a wee baby gun... yet! :)

Anyone have any idea about BNL or the Orpheum?

MPayne -- I live near there. Park in the underground lot right across Hennepin Avenue from the Orpheum. I can't remember the cross street, but it's about 1/2 block down from the Orpheum entrance -- BEFORE you pass the Orpheum -- closer to the Basilica and Buca than to Block E. The parking lot is not very well marked, but it's usually the cheapest lot around, and well-lit inside. You just have to cross Hennepin Ave. and walk right in.

Unless you enjoy the alternative lifestyle, just be sure to avoid "The Saloon" and Hotel Amsterdam across the street.

I suggest a good tactical folding knife and a lot of situational awareness. Those seats at the Orpheum are pretty tight to try to hide a sidearm. However, I think you just are asked to leave and face a minor fine if caught.

I saw BNL at the Xcel Energy Center a few years ago. Great show -- enjoy! Maybe I'll try to scrounge up some tickets.

I haven't been to a concert at the Orpheum for years. We do go there for plays once in a while, and security did not include metal detectors or pat-downs for Jesus Christ Superstar last Spring or Urinetown last month (OMG what an awful play).

The rabid rabbit antis here in MN probably think the sign will actually somehow protect them from criminals.

Mpayne,

If I had a million dollars, I'd buy you a bodyguard in a green dress (but not a real green dress, that's cruel) and you wouldn't have to worry about carrying anything but a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.

Is this band related to the Dipsy Twits ....?

Went to see the Blue Man Group arena show in August at the (former) Starlake Amphitheater. They got so caught up in confiscating my $1.50 fake 'biner keychain ('cause it can be used as brassknuckles you know) that they completely overlooked a Spyderco Harpy, a Spyderco Police Model, an NAA Guardian .32, and a flask of Bushmill's Irish whiskey. "Security" in most venues isn't even a joke.

The private security at the Orpheum just asked to have jackets and purses open -- they were only looking for macaroni boxes!!! (It's a BNL thing)

I walked past all the signs with a smile on my face.

I am protected, and they are blissfully ignorant. Everyone wins.

And the show was great.

By the way, ReadyOnTheRight, the only way to get fined for legally carrying in MN is to refuse to leave when asked (or carrying drunk, of course).

I love my SmartCarry!
