Im next to Magic Mountain in Valencia.. been here my whole life and just burnt out of it. Im actually a Teamster in the movie industry but the past 2 years with the writers and actors strike hurt so i ended up taking a job with a biomedical company that is moving to San Antonio that my g/f has worked at for 4 years now... so my union status is solid and she will move up being in a new building so we took their contract they provided us with and took them up on their offer to get the heck out of here.
So much filming has already left SoCal, it doesn't matter if i fly out of LAX or San Antonio airport.
So cheaper living, less trafic, friendly people, all of my hobbies (Offroad, firearms, muscle cars) seem more accepted there :)
Going to be exciting.
My work will be 1/4 from bass Pro shop!... im going to be so poor. hahahaha

Yep, that's what I tell 'em. Been here 35 years. Coincidentally, I moved from Redlands, KA. The hardest part was realizing that I could just sloooow down a little bit and enjoy life. Sit on the porch and drink some iced tea and talk with folks.

Jake, I lived in the Golden State in 76-77, the Monterey Peninsula in fact, which is about as scenic as you can get. It was beautiful, without a doubt. But a lot of blood has gone over the dam since then. I'm glad I'm not there anymore no matter what the view from my window used to look like.
King, you are on the right track. San Antonio is a very nice place. Don't forget to write GTT on your door when you leave. (Gone To Texas)

I fled CA in 1992 because I was fed up with the Draconian gun laws and ultra Liberal politics. Quit my job, sold my house, left my family and friends. bounced around being unemployed and underemployed in 3 states before finally settling down in AR. I don't regret it a bit.
You will be amazed at how different things will be in a free state.
I wish you and your GF (after all this still only GF status?) all the best in your new life.

We have been together for 6 years. Things have been hectic between life, family, Family members passing and in suffering for a long while, other weddings, ect going on before we could really get serious about it.

The mountains of Northern Cali are beautiful. Its the southwest part that needs to slide into the ocean most of us take fault with, me thinks :D

Going to visit my Daughter in Austin next week. She's going to graduate school at UT.
I like that Texas like my home state of Florida doesn't have any state income tax either.
I married a Los Angles girl when I was in the Corps, when I got out I refused in the late 70's to live in **********. In those 33 years, not once did I ever question my decision. It was one of the best decisions of my life.
I like the free state of Arizona, I am sure you will like San Antonio, I do.

KingoftheHill - Congrats!! And good choice in San Antonio. I fell in love with the prettiest young cowgirl for a while in a honkytonk bar in that town many years ago and have a fond memory of the landscape too.
No kidding - folks in Texas are different - Good different! Heart like you don't find too many places, except Georgia. :)
jakemccoy: Whatever you do, don't hate me because my state is more beautiful than yours
You think California, that place overrun with crowds and foriegners is beautiful? You need to schedule a vacation in the Northwest ,son.
Born in Sausalito and raised in Tiburon. Still own a house in Santa Cruz but sold my father's $12,500 (1952) house in Tiburon for you wouldn't believe how much!
Retired from a Santa Clara you know what company at age 47, moved in with my now wife to Alameda.
Three years later were were married and hauled ass out of the state, selling her house at that time. Neither one of us has had to work a day since. Thanks California, and KMA!
I haven't even BEEN in California for ten years now, and the last time I was there I got a ticket for pulling my empty trailer faster than 50 mph on I5 no sooner than I'd crossed the Oregon border. I was on our last trip to retrieve our stuff. Talk about the nice place to be FROM.

I was born here and other than a little time in the PRK while serving in the USMC, I have never lived anywhere else. I have had the luxury of visiting 40+ states and there are only a handful of places I would consider "on par" with the People, Cost and Freedom.
SA is my second favorite city just behind Fort Worth. Dallas (where I live) is way overrated and has lost its Texas culture for the most part. Houston is just too darn big for my taste, but it is a great town.
Here are some of my local haunts in SA that are must do's.
Chris Madrid's - Good food and coldest beer in the State
La Fogata - Outstanding food
Mi Tierra - Outstanding food
Gruene Hall - Old school music
Wurstfest - New Braunfels (coming up in Nov)
NIOSA - look it up
Comal River
Guadalupe river - Tube below the dam at Canyon lake
Pedernales falls
Canyon Lake
Get a nice 200 yard rifle and take aim at some pig ears. Millions of them in the State and they are good eating too.
PS. The city is Spurs crazy. Sort of on the same level as Okies are with Zero U. Get used to it.
PSS. Austin is a bunch of liberals so if you get homesick, just spend a day in that S hole of a city.
One warning: It is H-O-T right now and unusually dry, so you are entering at a time of extremes. It will get better.
Welcome to the Republic of Texas my brutha.

I did the same. Traded kalifornistan for the beauty of 4000 table gunshows and machine gun shoots (Tulsa).
But be advised. 100 degrees in kalifornistan desert is not the same as 100 degrees with 80% humidity. Sometimes I think they must be taking those readings from underwater.
Oh yeah, you have to treat yourself to a Bohanan's filet when you get there.

Texas looks a lot like California. Sure, you can have guns and the like, but the Texas spirit has been replaced by people not from or about Texas. It's Texas in name only.
There are but a million and one different things a person who supports the, "Screw you and your odds, we're doing it MY WAY" philosophy would view as a fatal flaw within this state.
such as mandatory vaccines, screwed up schools, failing infrastructure, and hell.. the alamo isn't even sure how to report its history anymore.. Could be because it's been turned into a BS memorial that's less about Texas and more about money, but you know..
can't blame a guy for trying to make a living.

I have a cousin who is 78 who was born and raised in Idaho and graduated from the U of I. She has lived, worked and is now in retirement along with her second husband in San Rafael just across the bay from San Fransicko. I call her once a year just to say Hi and I asked her along with her husband who was on speaker phone what they thought of Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer. They got upset because they knew where I was headed and commenced to tell me they were the greatest Congress People they have ever had to represent them. They even commenced to tell me I was crazy for even having a gun in my house. I have a daughter and her family in Lancaster north of LA in the Air Force and have bought a house this year. I want to get them out of that insane asylum as quick as I can and it drives me crazy to see what it does to people that live there. Nobody is minding the store in that state, the caufers are empty, half speak no English, and the Zombie population is not getting any smaller. So I can sympathize with anyone that wants to leave that place and never come back.

I got my first gun in West Tx in 1995 , a Colt series 80 . Then a Ruger .22 pistol . Then a Russian SKS . And many more guns... Then moved here in Houston and many more guns. Thanks Texas for the right to bear arms.

Adding to this, San Marcos/New Braunfels is great for floating the river(Medina Lake and Lake LBJ are also places near and dear), A Place to Shoot is one of my favorite ranges, and Floore's Country Store has some great food and even better tunes.
And for some good grub, try the BBQ Station, Texas Pride BBQ, and the Josephine St. Cafe are some of the best.

And if they ever decide to move east, tell them all states except Massachusetts, New York and Illinois have disappeared. And those that haven't disappeared are closed.

I hope all goes well with your move. You are lucky to have a job to go to. I was born and raised in my home state of Texas. We moved a lot, but I spent most of my time in Houston or Sealy and the surrounding towns: Brenham, Bellville, Katy, etc. I still remember my two favorite places to eat or get food: Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant and Brenham sausage, Co. The epitome of great food. Unfortunately, my mother, sister and I were forced to leave because of domestic issues. I have lived in the People's Republik of Mass-holes for WAY too long. I have been trying to relocate back to the Austin area for about a year now. I don't have the money to finish college here, so there is no reason to stay. I have a decent job as a Systems Technician for a fairly large newspaper company, but I am having trouble finding a job in the Austin area. I have applied for at least a hundred jobs so far. Full cover letter and resume; no playing around. But nothing has turned up. I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and just move down there and get an apartment and see if I have better luck as a local resident. If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate a PM so as not to hijack this thread, which I may have already done... Anyway, Kingofthehill, I know you will enjoy the great state of Texas. I hope it has not changed too much in the last decade that I have been away. Let us know how the San Antonio area is.

Congrats on your move! I've got friends from the SA area and they rave about it, so I have a feeling it'll be a good thing for you.
I moved out of the DPRK in 2005 when we had all that rain. The El Prado Dam almost burst (Chino Hills area in the Inland Empire by the 71 and 91 freeways) and all the dead wood from the bark beetle infestation did no good at preventing the mud slides. Conservationists 0, common sense 1.
I moved the family to Idaho, just outside of Boise. My kids don't take "allergy" medicine anymore (IMHO, I think it was the smog affecting them) and buying a firearm is like buying a good bottle of bourbon .... show some ID, pay, and off you go.
There is nothing quite like having desert to ride 4 wheelers in, hot springs to soak in while camping, and the beautiful Sawtooth Mountains to climb and enjoy the scenic views. We even have snow into May and June most of the time.
Oh, and I visit the in-laws in Oceanside once in a while ..... when I miss the ocean enough.

I believe when you leave to make sure of a few things. Do not tell them you are leaving the state untill you have all of you money from any real estate deal in CA in your pocket.
Make sure if you have sold anything like a rtv or anything else that the state has agreed with paperwork you no longer own it.

Good luck on the move, by reading the posts, it sounds like you are welcomed and will be a good fit. The only shame of leaving the anti states is that the antis spread into the pro states still because the pro states funny enough have better standards of living, better employment(or unemployment rates rather) rates(from some research I've been doing on tax rates and all), just seems eventually the antis will overrun us all lol from the way their states are going. I've been getting more and more students(I'm an NRA certified pistol instructor and Florida born and bred southern son) from New York city, Illinois(Chicago a few of them), and the rare Californian, and they all have things to tell me about what's wrong with my state. So please, and I'm sure you won't, don't go picking tempers and comparing states. Other than that welcome to the free states and enjoy yourself.
