.17 Remington Question

Traded into one. Shoots okay, but has the proverbial "quickly dirty" problem.
Question: Is there a powder which is suitable for it which burns clearner? Doesn't grunge the barrel so soon?

When I had my 17 Remington got some good groups with ball powders such as AA2520 but they tend to foul to bore very fast. Found out extruded powders were better with this issue. You can only do so much to help the 17 Remington because it burns so much powder in such a small hole. I settled on H4895. These days I would try Hodgdon Benchmark along with H4895 Benchmark wasn't around when I had my 17 Rem.

I'm trying Benchmark for my .204 Ruger, which is kind the same animal. Any caliber that has a powder charge that weighs as much as the bullet is gonna be touchy.
Good rule of thumb is faster powder and/or heavier bullet. As noted, ball powders typically tend to be less forgiving.

Ah, so. Thanks. I may well mess around and try the Benchmark; I have some 4895 on hand...
