How could I find out how laws governing acquisition of guns from an FFL or non-FFL, carry permits apply to tourists, student/work visa visitors, Green Card holders? Thanks!

Here's the Tennessee handgun permit (http://www.state.tn.us/safety/handguns.html) page.

Here's the ATF's firearms page (http://www.atf.gov/firearms/index.htm)

Hope this helps

TN pages makes it seem that anyone except a tourist can get a CHL.

However, ATF site says non-resident aliens are prohibited from possession of firearms absent an (unlikely) waiver from the prohibition from the U.S. Attorney General. Wonder if that would extend only to buying from FFLs or to person-to-person as well...probably the former.

Mr. Wolf, it depends, however the facts you likely describe it would be the former (as latter would be governed by state law).

The couple waivers I have been involved in the guns came in with the individuals who were accompanying another person to check on a family members studies at a certain university. They brought their own.

I am curious as I occasionally train newbies and some are on worker or student visas from various places. Seems like purchasing a modern firearm would be a real hassle for them, and may be legally impossible.

A former boss of mine had Resident Alien status (I think that's what it's called). He's a British subject, had/has a green card, or the equivalent for residents if the name for that is different, and owned lots of guns, if I'm not mistaken. Enthusiastic target shooter and hunter. I'm afraid that I don't know about non-residents, though. I'm in NC; YMMV.
