Under $300...

I finaly had time to hit the local pawn shops this morning. I try to make it in near the end of the month as cash seems to speak louder at that time than it does after their bills have been paid. :D

Today, I added another pistol to that part of my centerifre pistol collection that is reserved for bargain pistols, arbitrarily these cost me less than $300.

I found a Commander languishing in the case of one shop, and although it wasn't a Colt, Kimber, or Springfield... it was reasonably tight, with a nice blued finish and dark walnut grips.

This one follows the Kimber style of cone-shaped bushingless 4" barrel, with a skeltonized hammer, beavertail grip safety and full length guide rod. It also wears Novak style sights and came with an ambi-safety, but I replaced it with a single side McCormick "Tactical" extended thumb safety shortly after getting it home, and function tested. I also put a McCormick long trigger in, to replace the heavy steel ersaztz Gold Cup trigger.

This little pistol proved to be reliable and quite accurate. I was able to easily keep my steel plates swinging from 15 - 20 yards.

The price?
$270 out the door.

The marque?
Charles Daly.

I figured for that price, even if it didn't behave like a pistol, it could always be used as a trot-line weight! :D

And... as long as it's dependable it will end up going places the ones that cost a couple of grand will not. I had a full size Daly for about a year. I really liked it and it was pretty accurate. Nice blue job too.
I think you got a good deal.

Well, I guess it's ok if you can inspect them first. :D How about a pic 9'er? Bren

Bren,

No time for taking pics today, when I stripped the gun to replace the trigger, the safety plunger and sping launched themselves into never land (someone should show the Filipinos how to kink that spring to keep it in the plunger tube).

No problem, since I had a spare spring and plunger on hand, except the plunger was a bit too large in diameter to fit in the tube without binding. So, I ahd to reduce the plunger a bit, then reblue and install it, fit the McCormick thumb safety, and clean up the hammer/sear.

It now has a nice 4lb trigger and ran thru 75 rounds of JHPs and SWCs without a single bobble. Not bad for cheap plinker.

Guess I'll have to find something else to use on the trot-line. :D

My Charles Daly was my first pistol.

Wouldn't have minded another one for that price.

Nice find!
