Where are there primers for sale?

This thread is for the purpose of posting places where Handloaders/Reloaders may be able to acquire primers. I keep hearing that the availability is improving, but the dealers I frequent never seem to have the particular product I need.

If you have information, please add a post on this thread, and AVOID STARTING yet another thread. If you list a dealer, please include a link to the web site, and a phone number.

Please note: It DOES NO GOOD to list places where there WERE primers for sale. If you got some at a local gun show which won't be repeated for months, or from a one-time-only local liquidation, it doesn't help other members, and you're just bragging.

It is my hope that we'll be able to discontinue this "sticky" soon, when the situation improves. One thing to remember: It is unrealistic to suppose that prices will EVER come down to where they were before last November. As Jeff Cooper wrote, "The past is another country."

Member The Real Mags sent a suggestion for this thread, and his input is appreciated.

I ordered primers from www.cabelas.com on Aug.13 and they were delivered today !

MAGTECH sm. pistol were $29.99 and Remington 209 shotgun were $40.99 for 1000
I know they were a little expensive and more when you add in the Hazmat fee but "You can't always get what you want but sometimes you get what you need"
I just checked and they are both still in stock !

Vance's in Columbus Ohio has them. You can only get 1000 per visit and I know the LP is $40 out the door and I think everything else was something like $37 out the door.

Fellow Virginians (sorry everyone else),

If you are within driving distance of the Warrenton/Opal Virginia area, Clarks Brothers gun shop frequently has primers in stock, just give a call and ask, they'll even hold a box or two for you if you ask. Good bunch of guys to deal with even if the prices are a little higher.

August 21, 2009, 03:32 PM
I was just at Vance's in Columbus, OH. They've got a whole section filled with CCI primers. Maybe 100k of LP, 4k Magnum SP, 50k of small rifle and 50k of large rifle. Sorry no small pistol. However, they did have about 50k of them a week or two ago when I restocked on SP.

They've also got 20-30k of Win 209's and 10k of Federal 209's for you shotgunners.

Good hunting Buckeyes.

August 22, 2009, 01:19 PM
Here's a good source for primers, was just there yesterday and picked up 1000 CCI #41 for $47.00

Scheels in Cedar Falls IA had all sizes today (I think...) I know they had small pistol, small rifle, and large rifle. They had some magnum primers as well, but I didn't pay attention to what size they were.

Mainly Remmy, and CCI, but some Winchesters BR IIRC.

They also had what looked like a good amount of handgun ammo, but I'm not a handgun guy so I didn't look too close.

It's worth a call if you are willing to drive.

Natchez has Fed small pistol, small rifle and small rifle match in stock now. But still no 215's.

ST I got a notice they had them in stock and ordered them within 15 minutes. I was able to get 2 boxes of Federal sm. rifle which I'm salting away after using up all my on hand CCI's, waiting for the shipment from Natchez to arrive. I have about 600-700 or so brass ready for powder - which will last me for a while.

...I'll start loading tomorrow and by Tuesday I'll be shooting again. It's been three months or more since I've been to the range.

I hope the damn scare is now over. This time around Natchez still showed them in stock around 45 minutes after all their e-mail notices went out. I'm taking that as a good sign that all the hoarders have maxed out their stocks, and this craziness is past us. Anyway, I now have 2K in new Federal primers sitting, waiting for the next time I start reloading, not counting tomorrow's reloading session. It'll be another three months before I'm needing more ammo again.

Thank you Natchez.

August 29, 2009, 12:40 AM
Yesterday afternoon Gunnies had roughly 25k of various types of Federal and CCI primers. $33/k

Natchez sold out...the hoarding phenomena is still in effect.... 5 boxes at a time through Natchez...200 primers a day at the local shop. My other hobby, golf, is surprisingly becoming more enjoyable than reloading and shooting.

August 30, 2009, 01:42 AM
Sodak has pistol and small rifle primers on hand, but they are very high. I didn't ask the price, but should have......$60!/1000 for Remington 7-1/2s.

gator23Natchez sold out...the hoarding phenomena is still in effect.... 5 boxes at a time through Natchez...200 primers a day at the local shop. My other hobby, golf, is surprisingly becoming more enjoyable than reloading and shooting. I dunno... The stuff stayed in stock and shippable for about 45 minutes this time. The last time they got some primers in, it only lasted about five or ten minutes, from turning out their blanket e-mail notices. I see this as a sign that the hoarders are nearly fully glutted and sated to capacity - signs of irrational panic-buying are diminishing. .

I agree, I golf too, and with less distractions (no shortage of golf balls) it's a lot more fun. I'm getting down into the mid-eighties too - for me and accomplishment.

Powder Valey at this moment (Sunday 8/30, 1:20 Eastern) has a good selection of WOLF primers. No small pistol however. (which is what I was looking for).

Mid-eighties...I'm right there with you...great to have fun without the non-sense. Funny about the golf ball point...Couldn't imagine spending hours on the internet in search of golf equipment for the weekly round. Hopefully we can all look back on this and laugh a bit about the shooting sport frenzy.

I see Bruno Shooters Supply still has select Wolf primers in stock.

Scheels stores in the mid west have had them in for about 2 weeks now. It depends on what you want, and how many! They each sell so many per customer and what do ya know they still have some in stock each day!

Hopefully we can all look back on this and laugh a bit about the shooting sport frenzy.Like with my guns when I got into golfing I bought more stuff than I really needed especially in the beginning. I still have about a 2 year supply (or more) of assorted golf balls - but excessive buying doesn't create any ball shortages, nor does a new guy in the White House cause a massive run on golf equipment.

I wonder if golf would be the same if it's future hung on the interpretation of an amendment to the Constitution .

I seem to be noticing more showing up in the "Buy, sell, trade: reloading components & gear", and many posts have reasonable prices. Methinks some folks went a we bit overboard and bought a bit too much. P51D

Don't worry mgkdrgn. I'm beginning to think midways notices are a scam. I've had some .380 dies on B/O for a few months. Got a notice the brand I ordered were "in stock". But they weren't of course....

So how can people have B/O's and they show/notify ANY in stock? My ship date still shows in December.

Emails do not arrive in everybody's inboxes at the same time.

Graffs had Federal Match Primers, at least over the weekend. I picked up 5K of SPM Match and with shipping and HZ fees it came to $184. A little pricey but I only use them for the .357. 5000 of these primers will last me a long time.

How I got the primers I wanted. I put a back order in with cabellas for 20K of Each Brand of small pistol primers. I let three orders come thru because the shipping was maxed out for my order. I now have at least 64K small pistol primers. Magtech and remington. Would be willing to trade for some large pistol primers thousand for thousand. PM if interested.

Gun shows in Houston seem to have primers regularly. Every time I've gone in to get the primers I wanted, they had them. The most difficult to find seemed to be the CCI 41 small rifle primers, but I can usually find a box or two if I go early enough.

Also depends on how much you want to pay.

There's another show this weekend in Pasadena. Not usually the best show of the Houston area shows, but good enough. There's usually one or two guys selling reloading supplies each show and for the last few months they seem to have had primers in stock.

Again, depends on how much you want to pay and for which brand/type you're looking for.

Fin, Feathers and Fur in Ashland, Ohio (east of Interstate 71 on US Route 250 East) has CCI and Winchester Small and Large Pistol (standard and magnum), Small and Large Rifle primers.
Limit is 1000 of any pistol primer AND 1000 of any rifle primer per visit.
1000 count is running about $42.
Fortunately my work per diem has been financing my primer purchases when I travel to Akron and Cleveland from Cincinnati, so I can't complain too much ;)

I got my Remington Small Rifles but the large pistols sold out. Bottom line, act fast, real fast and you may get lucky like I did.

What's happening is this. The component manufacturers will tell you that they ARE NOT IN THE BUSSINESS OF COMPONENTS. They are in the business of making ammunition. When the shelves at your Local Walmart are full there will be all of the components, primers included, you would ever want.

Sooner or later these frantic fanatics that believe our gun rights are going down the drain run out of money or storage space you'll have all you want.

Now, that is straight from the industry inner circle fokes!:banghead:

In April I backordered a case each of Winchester SP, LP, LR and LRM from Cabelas. They just notified me that they shipped the LPs, and LRs. Finally. The SPs and LRM are anticipated in early January. We'll see.

November 18, 2009, 08:43 PM
i ordered primers earlier this spring and had to wait about 2 months to receive them. i used "bill me later" vs. a credit card. i don't know if that made a difference as i had seen other threads where people's orders were canceled when using credit cards. maybe cabela's was getting many cancellations due to people doing multiple orders from vendors and then dropping those orders upon receipt (causes pain for retailers). my advice is to put an order in with a reputable vendor and start the waiting game--make your purchase worth the cost of hazmat costs (get 5-10k) and you should be good.

good luck!;)

put in the order a powder valley and start waiting. took me around 6 months to get more wolf in but it finally came in as well as my varget. now, just waiting on my fed gold medal match primers which will probably take a couple more months.

Wiley's Gun Shop
Address: 7009 Vz County Road 2120, Wills Point, TX 75169 - Van Zandt County
Phone: (903) 848-7912

It was a beautiful thing - I drove up to the shop, about 10 miles off of Interstate 20.

There, stacked on the shelf, were bricks of primers - small pistol primers - priced at $40 a brick.

I asked the clerk, "So, how many of these can I buy?"

He turned to the owner, "Are we still limiting the amount of primers for sale?"

The owner grunted, "Naw, we just got a big shipment in."

My knees went weak. This is what it must have been like back in those legendary days the old-timers spoke of - when anyone could walk into a store and just buy primers, like it was no big deal.

"I'll...I'll take a brick..." I stammered as I took the box from the shelf. I could hardly believe it - a thousand primers - no waiting - not unreasonably priced.

"No," I said - my voice steadying. I stood tall seeing the promise of better days ahead - "I'll take two."

I bought 5000 off the shelf here in Houston at a local sporting goods place. 3000 large rifles, 2000 small rifles. I was looking for small pistol but they were out. They even had a variety. I would guess they had about 20,000 available for sale on the shelves. Pretty much anything you wanted but small pistol primers.

I also noted that the store was very well stocked with bullets, brass and powder. This is a place that a few years ago it was nearly deserted of reloading gear. I was pleased to say the least.

I should add, it was Carter's country, I-10 at Voss.

December 18, 2009, 10:58 PM
I again went to Cabelas, but they were out of CCI small pistol primers, but had some in Federal. I asked if I could buy a brick and they said I could if they were not the only ones they had, if they were they would have to sell them by 100's.

He went in back and said there were plenty, so I could take at least 1000. :D They cost I think $33

I walked into my local shooting range and they had small pistol primers, aa9, H110 but no powder pistol. I picked up 3000 small pistol, 2 lbs of aa9 and 1 lb of h110 for a total of 129 if I remember correctly.

I went back home and fired up the presses. It has been too long since I reloaded and I have empty brass all over the place. For me, the primer famine is over since I can in Houston basically walk into any of stores I shop and get them off the shelf. No reason to hold back on loading anymore.

With that said, today is 357 max, 357magnum and if I get time I will start on the 38/44's today. I need to get about 750 maxes, 3000 magnums and 2500 38/44's made up today.

January 5, 2010, 11:34 PM

just ordered some Remington rifle primers from here, no asterisk next to them, I got a strange shipping notification stating someone mailed me something? Guess only time will tell if it's legit.

I like the policy though, they are limiting how many can be purchased. Thanks to the previous post about Cabelas, I was able to get pistol primers still, got rifle primers possibly from the above link.

Hopefully things won't continue to be this bad, I'm just trying to save money at the range, going every friday is getting expensive... I'm beginning to wonder if I yet again picked the wrong hobby, but it's really fun.

Hi, new username but long-time reader of THR and reloader/shooter.

GimpyLeg, I have always used Winchester primers, but due to the recent shortage, my inventory now includes Magtech, Wolf, and PMC primers.

Bought some small pistol PMC primers from Wideners in November. They are made in Russia, marked "Non-Toxic, Non-Corrosive" on the box, and primers are brass cups marked with "E" on the bottom.

As to performance, PMC primers required 2/10 grain more powder to match the load performance of Winchester/Magtech primers (Stock Glock 22, Winchester 231/Hodgdon HP/38 powder) and just as accurate.

My recommendation would be, since they are both made in Russia and wolf primers have been cheaper ($26/case of 5000 at last local gun show in November) and burn hotter (same charge as Winchester/Magtech) to buy the wolf primer if you can.

FYI, Magtech primers seem to be slightly less tight and Wolf/PMC primers slightly tigher than Winchester in primer pockets (I hand prime all of my cases). I reloaded and shot over 15K non-Winchester primers in 2009, and all the primers have been reliable with no dead primer cups.

January 12, 2010, 11:58 AM
if you use the wolf primers, you need to stick with them. i have heard numerous times that the wolf is stiffer and wears the primer pocket. not a big deal on pistol, or rifle if you don't use expensive cases (range pickups etc okay)..

i've heard after using wolfs for one or two loads chester-win's are overly loose or will fall out.

i've always had good luck with PMC products.. don't care for wolf.

January 12, 2010, 05:09 PM
Moderator, perhaps the discussion regarding different primers and their performance/effects on primer pockets should move to another thread since this thread is about the availability of primers and where THR readers can obtain them.

As to Wolf primers enlarging primer pockets, I am not sure if that is entirely due to wolf primers. My experience has been that Wolf/PMC primers are slightly tigher in the primer pockets than Winchester with Magtech slightly less tight. Wolf primers seem to burn slightly hotter then Winchester and PMC primers less hotter based on the amount of powder charge required to match the same performance of Winchester (Magtech performance is essentially the same as Winchester).

I thought excessive charge/pressure often caused loose primer pockets; and perhaps, it is pressure not Wolf primer that may be causing loose primer pockets. If Wolf primers burn hotter, a slight less charge may reduce the extra pressure from hotter primers. For PMC, I use 2/10 grain more of Win231/HP38 to match the same performance of Winchester. For Wolf, I use the same powder charge as Winchester.

My reference loads: 45ACP (230 gr/5.0 gr Win231/HP38); 40S&W (180 gr/4.9 gr Win231/HP38); 9mm (115 gr/4.9 gr Win231/HP38).

tommyintx, I have noticed that PMC primer cups are softer than Wolf/Magtech/Winchester. If Wolf primer cups are indeed wearing the primer pockets, then PMC primers may be the way to go.

In my opinion, until the primer shortage comes to an end, Magtech/Wolf/PMC primers all go bang in my reloads. When Winchester primers are available again, I will be buying Winchester (or other US made primers) exclusively even at a higher price to support US vendors.

I have never had any primer pocket enlargement issue with Winchester primers except for excessive pressure loads.

A local shop had a few supplies today but not much. I'm only writing about it because it's the first time in almost a year he had anything at all on the shelf. He has/had 5000 CCI #34 NATO primers, 5000 CCI #41 NATO primers, 5000 CCI-500 SP primers, 5000 Remington LR primers, and 3000 Federal SR primers. Like I said, not a ton of stuff but more than I've seen there in a year. It may be a good sign.

As for powders, a case of H4895, a case of Red Dot, a half case of each W231 and W296, a few 1 lb bottles each of Unique, 2400, Herco and Power Pistol.

By the end of the day there wasn't much left but like I said, it was there. I expect the shelf to be empty again by tomorrow evening. (I bought 2,000 CCI #34 primers for my Garand :D)

For you shooters in the Mpls/St. Paul area Bullseye Shooter's Supply in Lake Elmo (east of St. Paul) has primers from Winchester, Federal, CC1 and Wolf. Chris is one of the owners. He's limiting purchases to 200 rifle and 200 pistol per day to make sure we all get some. But depending on what you want and what he has the limit can be upped to 1000. The only large rifle primers I can find are the CCI benchrest version. (Cabelas, Post Falls ID) However, their powder selection has gone from ZERO to having some of the less obscure types (still no IMR 4831 anywhere on earth), and the salesman said they are starting to see increased shipments and he anticipates greater availability in the next few months. Does this mean all you stockpilers ran out of room to squirrel away my FED215 and CCI250 primers and stopped buying them on sight? LEAVE SOME FOR ME!!! :)

I ordered 10,000 Wolf large rifle and 1,000 Wolf small rifle magnum primers from Powder Valley on Jan. 25. They were dropped off by UPS yesterday. Cost was $321.63 including hazmat and shipping. That's $29.24 per thousand; just under 3 cents each, delivered. Mfg. date was mid 2009.

February 8, 2010, 11:17 AM
Not sure if this will help anyone; I did see primers at Whittaker Guns in West Louisville, Kentucky and a few at Gander Mountain in Evansville, Indiana.

February 19, 2010, 03:28 PM
MidwayUSA.com has CCI SP right now for about $32

February 19, 2010, 11:28 PM
Although we have a web site, it is passive. We haven't been able to monitor it on a daily bases. My wife and I run, with the help of 6 employees, one of the last old fashion mom and pop gun shops in Idaho. We just hired a new young fellow to replace our current IT man. Hopefully he will eventually get time to upgrade the website. (cliffsgsr.biz) Our pricing can't compete with any of the big box stores, but where they have one main warehouse to supply 30+ stores, I on the other hand, I have to buy from 5-6 distributors to constantly fill my shelves. I checked last night and found Natchez and Midway both had basically 209 primers and not much more. As you saw on my thread we have nearly all primers available, at this time, more than all of last year. Especially with Federals which we received very little of last year. I rarely have time to spend on the computer, in fact I should be getting ready for my pig shoot I'm going on next weekend. It is always best to call to get in touch with any of our employees that can help you with your orders. 208 375 8694 after 10 am Boise time, Tue- Sat. I hope we can help the dedicated as well as the beginner to shooting and reloading.

I'm holding off buying online for a little while (although I did buy some CCI #41 at MidwayUSA two days ago, but that's only because I was picking up an order there anyway). The best prices I've seen lately are, believe it or not, at a gun show. One vendor was selling Wolf for $26, Federal for $32, CCI #34 and #41 for $36. Also had lots of powder. Takes credit cards. The next show is March 20-21 at the KCI Expo Center in Kansas City for anyone who's close. Those prices and no hazmat fee make it palatable (as long as we try not to remember the prices two years ago).

March 3, 2010, 03:05 PM
Whittaker Guns in West Louisville, KY is loaded down with primers. I got 1000 CCI LPP for $33.95. Theyare loaded down with SPP, LRP and LRP. Here's the link to their online store but they don't have primers or powder on it.

We have a gun show this weekend, but the county doesn't allow the sale of smokeless propellants, black powder and small arms primers. So, I placed an order with Powder Valley. Didn't know about them until I read it here. Drove down and picked it up today. Real nice folks.

And I liked their sign on the wall. To help keep our cost down, please pay with check or cash. There is also a big yellow lab in the office that is very well-trained. Walked over to me, sat and waited to be petted. After being petted, the dog laid down at my feet.

I asked about small pistol primers. Was told they have an order coming from Wolf, but no small pistol in it. No others on the horizon. I did bring home LP, LPM & SPM, along with a few cans of powder.

Hello Everyone,

I have about 3500 primers that my father wants to sell and I don't know where I can sell them. I assume that they are regulated by some ammunition/HAZMAT regulation so I can't just sell them on ebay and ship them anywhere....? Can anyone give me directions on where and how to sell them?

we've got:
2400 of the Federal Champion Centerfire Primers -- no. 205

1100 of the Federal Premium Gold Medal Centerfire Primers -- no. GM205M

Also, after doing some research online it looks like they sell for about $45 per 1000 for the 205 and $80 per thousand for the GM205M. (including shipping) Does that sound about right?

I appreciate any help.
Everyone have a great day.

Can anyone give me directions on where and how to sell them? Not sure if anyone answered your question, if not, Skip the Haz Mat issue and head on over to the Buy, Sell, Trade forum (http://www.thehighroad.org/forumdisplay.php?f=50) and post it up with your state in the title. Someone in your area will be interested if the price is fair. Rest assured it will go to a good cause as the members here are a good bunch.
I do think the price you are quoting is a bit high though.

March 5, 2010, 10:53 PM
These have been very hard to find all last year. Your price seams reasonable if you are paying the hazmat. 25.00 plus the shipping adds up. May want to adjust price if someone wants multiples of thousands. You can ship up to 50 lbs in one box, with one hazmat fee. Penalty for not shipping hazmat, 1st time caught is $25,000.00 fine. I just spent over $2,000.00 just to get started to be able to ship powder and primers. Questions just call. 208 375 8694 tue-sat 10am-6pm. Cliff

Certain sizes and brands are still scarce in some areas, true. However, most of us are able to find something that will work. And, predictably, we'll pretty certainly never see the prices back down where they were 18 months go.

In any case, though, this thread has served its purpose and there's little use in keeping it as a sticky.

May 2, 2010, 11:51 PM
No posts on this one in a while, so I might suppose that primer availability is no longer an issue.

That said, figured I "might as well" give a heads-up..........
MidSouth Shooters Supply ( www.midsouthshooterssupply.com ) has, for the last 3 months, been the "most likely" source I've checked with supplies of DOMESTIC small pistol (and my precious Rem 9-1/2 LR) primers.

I admit that the CCI-500's I've bought are mostly APS strips, which for me require de-stripping, but at 27 bucks per 1000 pre-shipping/haz, it's still quite a hell of a deal. They've had the Rem 6-1/2's I use in my Hornet for months.

No denial here, the "have picture ID on file" part of their hazmat shipping requirement is a pain in the @$$, but it was handled overnight with a simple scan-and-send from my scanner.

If you're looking, give a look.

PS - after re-reading this is one heck of a sales pitch. Not affiliated in any way for what it's worth, just pleased at their availability and speed of shipping ("almost" midway...) once you jump that initial PITA-hurdle and email the ID photo over.

For those in the southern Ohio area, several vendors have various primers for sale at Bill Goodman's Gun & Knife show. I've seen sp, spm, sr and ss primers as far as types and Fed, CCI, WW and Wolf with regards to brands. The next show is on the 15th in Cincinnati.

Olde English Outfitters in Vandalia has a fairly large assortment of primers and powder also.

Justin, I think with the recent concern over some Wolf small pistol primers not igniting, demand for them may have dropped. With domestic primers becoming more available at lower prices ($28/1000), I think Wolf may have hard time selling them even at $25/1000.

BTW, Recob's Target Shop has CCI/Winchester primers at $28/1000 - http://www.recobstargetshop.com/browse.cfm/2,193.html

Don't assume the picture gets updated every time a fresh batch of primers arrives. I'm not saying that you won't receive brass colored primers . . . I'm saying there's no guarantee you will just because the picture shows them.

Went to a local gun show yesterday and saw the ammo/component vendors with just about all types of Winchester primers in sufficient quantities in stock (no limits). Winchester SP/LP primers were $21.95/1000. And to my surprise, no pushing or shoving to get to the primers, just nice and civil lines formed to get everyone's fill. It was like good old days before the shortage when I bought Winchester primers for $19/1000.

Same for powder, other than Vihtavuori, just about every powder manufacturers were represented in 1, 4, 8 lb containers including more popular ones.

It sure was a beautiful sight - almost brought tears to my eyes. :D

Graf and Sons has CCI Small Pistol primers for $109/5000 or $21.80/k. This is comparable to Weidner's Wolf primers at $19.00/k.

I just got 10k of the CCIs from Grafs last week. Of course I put the order in in January. :) But I think they're getting faster about filling these. CCI was severely back ordered last year.

= NOTE = Yes, this is an old thread but looks like it's time to bring it back.

Feel free to post sources of primers when they become available again.

As of 4:06am Central time, 1/4/2013, Powder Valley had Tula [TUL 223 PRIMERS (KVB223M) (1000)] primers in stock. I just ordered 6k. I've been avoiding any and all panic buying but after trying to track down 3-400 small rifle primers for a get-together next month I realized I better buy a few more than I intend to shoot right away. I could have ordered more and left less for the next guy but just figured I'd order enough to last me 6 months of normal shooting. Hopefully this all blows over by then. I tried to order some powder too but they seemed to be out of everything that I CAN'T find locally.

I wish l of my southern neighbors good luck in things getting back to normal.
I was in a small mom and pop gun shop in northern NY where I usually buy my reloading and casting equipment and can tell you that even in the furthest corners of the US of A, even in AWB NY the shelves are bare of anything AR related.
The poor bullet shelf that is behind the counter looks like a small band of thieves went through it leaving only the most oddball calibers laying around.

this is crazy.... SP primers are totally gone... I would think the primer manufacturers would be trying to pump out as many primers as possible to take advantage of this but it just looks like they dont care
