Hazmat.... signature required for delivery?

I am trying to order some primers from Grafs, and they say a signature "may" be required for delivery. Does anyone who has done this before know if it really will be? I've always bought components locally, but since we don't have them locally anymore I'm going to have to figure out a way to do it online. Thanks,

An adult signature will be required to protect the liability of the Shipper/shipping company, since Primers are considered Hazardous/Explosive...

Just got some primers yesterday from Midway. The UPS driver just left them at my front door- no signature.

The only thing I've had to sign for was C&R firearms and that was because the sender required it. I have received loaded ammo as well as hazmat bluing chemicals without signature.

Hmm... well I had it shipped to my parents' house, addressed to my mother, since it says "ID may be required for proof of age". If they wanted ID in addition to someone being there, and the addressee wasn't there, I guess there is a possibility I could be screwed that way as well?
I shouldn't actually *need* the components for a few months, and can go pick them up at my leisure. We'll see how it goes. Right now primers are my limiting factor for pistol; I've got about 750 left. I ordered 5k primers and 8lb of HS-6; that should keep me shooting pistol for a while. As long as I can eventually get bullets on backorder at least.
I'd send them to work, but we have a "no firearms" policy, so I won't send ammo there due to the ORMD sticker on the outside... I assume this box will have something similar.

Your cover is blown. There will be a large sticker saying "Primers for Small Arms" on the package. The signature requirement is Graf's policy, not the shipping company.

I've received countless shipments of primers, powder, primers & powder, ammo, firearms (long gun and hand gun) and the only ones that I have ever had to sign for was if delivered by Fed Ex. UPS and USPS never ask, regardless of what it states on the package. UPS opens the door, leaves the box(es) and leaves. Point is, I beleive it is the local delivery service that "decides" this. In my area, FED Ex is a disaster whom I do all that is possible to avoid and UPS is just great, but I've heard others say just the opposite in other areas.

Grafs uses fedex I just tape a note on the door telling the driver its ok to leave make sure to sign it
That is if it says indirect signature on your tracking info if it says any thing else someone has to be there

I think you will find that, if you contact graf's, you can arrange to leave a signed post-it note for the driver.

Leave a signed note on the door instructing them to leave them, done this many times with haz-mat from Graf's. Or, wait until they attempt delivery and then call and have them held for pickup.

Well I just found out my folks will be out of town next week, so I will have to call Graf tomorrow anyway. I placed the order late today, so I think the chances it has shipped are minimal.
I will ask them about the possibility of leaving it on my porch.

My last Grafs order involved about 5k small pistol primers. They were shipped Fedex Ground. Of course, I was at work and came home to a tag on the door for when they would try to deliver them again. I called Fedex and went to their depot, had to show ID at a guard shack, then walk into their office, show ID again, wait until they pulled the box off the next day's delivery truck, sign a form, take the form and box out to the guard shack, all before it was over. I'll leave the note on the door next time.

ny32182 ,
Don't worry about a delivery of primers next week, most of us have been waiting 6-8 weeks or longer for primers.

All of my H-M shipments were just left on the porch.

It completely depends on your neighborhood. Unless you live in a bad area, FedEx and UPS both will opt to leave packages at your door, even though they often times should be signed for. The only exception is when the shipper explicitly requires a signature... as someone suggested about Grafs. I've ordered powder and primers a few times (not from Grafs) and mostly never was home to receive them.

I agree, I live in the woods and they leave everything on the porch. Even if I am home the driver will beep the horn and if I don't come out he just leaves the stuff and hauls a**. I once had a issue with Fedex and had to call the corp. office now they just leave stuff. I think my name or address pops up a red flag and they know it is better to just leave the stuff then to have to get a call from the corp. office.

Well, my neighborhood is pretty "boring"; normally UPS and USPS will leave boxes at my doorstep. The vendors I use don't seem to use Fedex for some reason.
The last box of primers I bought locally cost $65, and these are the first ones I've seen in stock online in a while... so I've been suffering through the component problem as bad as anyone, trust me. Hoping for light at the end of the tunnel.

The other thing I find humorous is the HAZMAT shipping and fee. Last Federal primers I got were in the sleeve box. No padding, no secondary box, no nothing. I think the box said "Federal small arms primers, Explosive" all over it and a couple stickers that wideners stuck on it, other than that, this is it. I am guessing the additional $22.50 is to keep UPS from running the package through their hydraulic package smashing machine.

Well I caught them in time and got the shipping address changed; however they told me that a signature would absolutely be required and there was nothing they could do about that. So I guess I will have to take a vacation day and see what happens. Or maybe I'll just see if they drop it the first day, and try to be there the second day if they don't.

Many times, they will leave a signature/delivery notice. If you sign the release and leave it on the door, then they will usually leave it.

Last time I dealt with Graf's, that is exactly what happened. Left the signed card out and got my stuff left on the porch the next day.

I have had good luck in putting 'No Delivery Signature Required' in the handling instructions of my web orders. This has worked for all HazMat shipments so far, although I also vaguely recollect that Wideners is the only place that I've used for HazMat stuff.

As mentioned before, it is not a Fed Ex thing or a UPS thing or a Graf thing or a WSSI thing or a neighborhood thing. It is a specific driver and local office thing. If the driver's a good guy and you've talked to him, he'll leave things and take care of the signing, whatever the shipper. If he's a nit picker with a hair up his hiney or has an ass for a boss, you can talk and beg till you're blue in the face and they won't leave it without an adult signature in person. If you have a neighbor that is home during the delivery time, they usually will take it there if you leave a note requesting such, giving the address of said neighbor. Not always. Our local Fed Ex office, which is horrid, told me that would require returning to the shipper for an address change! They are real customer friendly! Consequently, I find it necessary to go to lengths to avoid dealing with companies that ship Fed Ex.

Well I guess it's different in different areas, but I've talked to both FedEx and UPS drivers and they told me if it's an okay neighborhood, they'll go ahead and leave the packages there. I'm sure if people started stealing them, that would quickly change. I've been lucky to live in decent areas and have always had packages left there without ever striking up a rapport with the drivers. I've lived three different places in the past eight years or so, and it's always been the same deal. (Although I've only ever tried to have hazmat stuff delivered to where I currently live.)

Well I just got a shipping notification... I could swear "UPS ground" was checked at the time of the order, but now they are saying it is Fedex.
UPS always drops stuff at my door... no experience with Fedex. Guess I'll see how it goes.
