S&W M&P Grips vs K-Frame Grips

I inheirited an old M&P .38 from 1930 or so and I have been looking for some large, but older style grips. I had assumed that these took normal K-Frame grips, but I found a set of old Mustang's and they really don't fit (seems like the arch is different on the backstrap among other things).
Are Mustang's just "unusual" ?
What kind of grips should I be looking for, if not K Frame?

An M&P is a K-frame...
Are you trying to put round butt grips on a square butt gun?

Nope, not trying to put square butt/round butt.
The Mustang's I have are an exposed backstrap design, and they taper from about flush at the top, to almost 1/4" of exposed backstrap at the bottom of the grip frame.
If the pre-model 10 M&P is truly a K frame, I have to assume that these grips are "special". I don't have any other K Frames around the house for comparison.

AFAIK, Mike is correct. I have put new grips on old M&P's and even on Victory Models (yes, I know, but the customer is always right and money talks). There is usually some fitting required, but not that much. You don't say how you "found" the Mustang grips and I wonder if they might have been altered.

These were an ebay purchase (not for much money).
They are walnut, and the only markings are "The Original Mustang Grip", several handwritten "K"'s, and a stamp on the right one that *might* be "O RG". Perhaps a Colt O Frame?

Not a big monetary loss, but I would be curious what they are really for so I could get them another home (my chisels are calling me).

It would be more helpful to see a picture of the other side of the grips.

I wonder if the seller was just assuming that they were K frame grips.
I have an assortment of 5,4 and 3 screw K frames and only two different grip frames amongst them. Round butt and square butt.
All the square butt ones will happily interchange grips.
Same with the round butt ones.
I also have a pair of really nice grips that don't fit anything. I thought they were for K frame when I got them. Oh well.

Perhaps a Colt O Frame?
The two most common Colt O frames handguns are...
The Government & Commander.
I don't think you'd confuse those with K frame grips, :D
They sure look like they have the S&W "hump" on the backstrap.
Are you sure they're not for a N frame?
Or perhaps an old Llama revolver?

I bought a coupla sets of mustang grips, and they wouldn't fit, either. I keep 'em around, just in case I need to throw something in a fire.

I seem to recall that among the "high quality precision German firearms" produced by Rohm Gesellschaft (RG) was a .38 Special that was sort of a copy of the S&W. I don't off hand know why Mustang would make a grip for it though, as the grip would cost as much as the gun.

Those don't look old to my eye.
I bought a set of "target" stocks for a Python at gunbroker.com a couple years ago for $35. The looked all right on screen, but didn't fit the gun very well, and were sloppily made. I have a hunch somebody in Russia or Eastern Europe is cranking them out by the millions.

I agree they don't seem like much of a match for my Colt 1991.
On the inside they look like:

-where #1 marks the grip screw, #2 marks the location for the "original" pin on the frame and #3 marks where the pin on the frame actualy is.
N Frame? I don't own any but it's sure possible.
I don't have any of the centerfire products by Roem, but I did inheirit a piece of history...

The grips don't seem to fit, but they do really dress it up. I assume this is the "two-tone Olympic target model" in .22 . I would normally create a more elegant display with a knife of equal quality, but the white plastic confuses my scanner ...
