Primers FAIR PRICE?

What is a FAIR price range for rifle primers today?

I paid 26.99 for a thousand CCI large riffle primers a few weeks ago.

I think anything below 30 bucks is fair in today's component market.

All depends on what the buyer is willing to spend. If the buyer is happy with his purchase then obviously it must be a fair price to him.

Heck I'm happy to buy gas under $2.50 a gal. after last years fiasco.

Yesterday (8-18-2009), while visiting one of the largest Gun shops in Connecticut (Hoffman's), I just happened upon a bonanza. they had on display and for sale virtually all of the primer types and sizes. This is the first time I have seen this amount of primer inventory in perhaps over a year. They even had Benchrest small and large rifle grades! Brands were CCI, Winchester, Remington and Federal. They were limiting primer sales to only 2000 primers per customer which is fair enough. Prices were about $34 per 1K with the exception of the benchrest grades which were $48.

Perhaps things are opening up and supplies are starting to flow! For those far distant from CT, Hoffman's does not ship mail order as far as I know.

At $30.00/1000, that's $3.00/100. When I started reloading about 25 years ago, I could go to the local drug store and buy them by the 100. They cost right about $1.49/100 then. Factoring in 25 years of inflation, those primers really aren't overpriced at all. We've just become too complacent in recent years. If you need them, and someone has them, then you'll buy them, at whatever the price is - or you do without.

My first primers were $6 a brick. They are actually "cheaper" today, at normal prices anyway, than then.

Inflation is a gov. planned thing. It lets them increase our taxes invisibily AND it gives up peons a false sense that our finances are actually improving. NOT! But, most Americans fall for it anyway. Oh well....

last non-match primers i bought were $14/1000. i'm just not paying $30/1000. maybe $20/1000. but over that, and i'll wait and take my chances on prices coming back down

You probably have quite a few on hand. Only wish I stockpiled when prices were low. Now anything under $30 seems to be fair!
Prices going to decline, I doubt it. Just like gasoline.

Mine were delivered today from Cabela's they were $ 35.00 a 1000 with postage and hazmat fee added in. Sometimes you get what you need !

The LGS has been having them for $22 per K. That's as high as I am willing to go, for the time being.

Oops, I lied accidentally. I just went back today and they are $32 per k. Don't know where I got $22 from? Looks like it's time to stop buying for a while to send these guys a message.

I just bought some CCI sp primers a month or two ago. I paid $22/thousand. I had to buy 5 thousand, which is more than I need, so I passed some of them on to a friend.

It doesn't seem that long ago when I could buy them at the local Bi-Mart for 99 cents a box (100) on sale, but I guess it's been about a decade and a half.

I say anything under 30 per 1k is fair. 20 is even better but I doubt prices will drop that low anytime soon.

I gave $39/1000 here locally.High but I was OUT.I only bought 1k and will work on getting some cheaper!

Few years ago I purchased enough primers to last the rest of my shooting career, that is if I live to be 80, another 15+ years. Cost, $50 per 5,000. Am I hoarding, I think not as this was when primers were available with no shortage, just bought out a close out of all sizes. Did the same with .22's, however I replenish as needed.Cost of target .22's now running about $80 a brick, or more.

IMO at this time I would say if you can find primers for under $30/K you're doing alright. I'm hoping when supplies return to normal the prices will be more like $20/K but I think that's a dream on my part. The prices never seem to come down to where they were even if the supplies return to normal.

Right now around $25 a K would be a good price. Most of the gun shops are in the $30-$40 a K range. I am sincerely hoping that once the immediate crunch is over and done, and the companies realize that the hoarders bought a lifetime supply (and not buying any more for a while) there will be sales or prices will drop.

When Wolf went for $18 to $20 I was sad.
When Wolf went from $21 to $26 I can get Winchesters for the same price if they are in stock.

I just picked up 1000 LPP and 1000 SPP at a local gun shop here in Connecticut. With tax these were $34.96 per box of 1000 which includes the sales tax (the Benchrest primers were near $50/1000). As of yesterday they had every category of primers on the shelves. Even Benchrest in LR and SM. The brands were CCI, Federal, Winchester and some Remington. This was the largest amount of primes and variety that I has seen in any one place in well over a year!

They were limiting each customer to 2 boxes only, or 2000 primers. And yes they were selling quite well. I noticed many folks getting on their cell phones and calling "buddies" to ask if they needed anything...

A fair price? How about the price they were bringing before this ridiculous hoarding began.

I sincerely hope the range owners and other retailers of reloading supplies come away from this with a valuable lesson. That being that the weekend shooter and reloader who may only use 200 to 300 rounds a month, is the real backbone of their business. And if these shooters and reloaders cannot buy primers, they will also NOT be buying any powder and NOT be buying and bullets or anything else in your store for that matter.

So to those retailers who made few extra bucks by letting a small few buy all the primers they had in stock, feel the full effect of the thousands of shooters who are no longer buying ANY reloading supplies, all for the lack of a 2 or 3 cent primer. YOU had the power to halt much of this hoarding by placing reasonable limits on all shooters and you failed. I hope when that bullet smacks you in the foot, it wakes you up.
