I'm using a PSE OMEN. 28"/70lbs + 405grain = 320FPS :evil::evil::D;) If i switch to 350grain, i'll get 340FPS...

Mathews Q2e (same as Q2 but with the energy cams) 72# at 30.5" Carbon Express shafts with 100gr Muzzy MX-4 broadheads. 12 year old bow that still shoots 295fps with heavy shafts, shoots tiny groups, and has killed about three dozen deer.

I plan on buying a new bow once the season is over and the shops mark them down.

...got it with outfitter package when the local trading post was clearing them out for $350...still $550 in most places.

50# for routine play...60# for deer season.

PSE Radial X-Weave carbons with Wasp Hi-Tech Hammer SSTs on the cutting end.

Added some limbsaver accessories to quiet it down that last little bit...

Very comfortable set up.

2008 Bear Instinct, w/ Easton 340s, .310, 10.0 gpi

or

2007 Liberty I, w/ Easton Epic 400s, .280, 8.7 gpi

or both. Both are set around 65#. Haven't decided on broadheads. Probably 100 gr Eastman First Cuts with the Liberty & 400s, and 125 gr 4-blade Muzzys or 125 gr Stingers with the Bear & 340s.

The OP mentioned his PSE and I also have a nice PSE fishing recurve (all aluminum, takedown). PSE makes fine compounds too.

Primary bow is Bowtech Admiral, 67#-28.5" draw shooting 29" FMJ 340's at 470grs, 272 fps.

Backup is a Bowtech Tomkat 67# - 28"draw shooting 430gr Carbon Express 6075's at 267fps.

Either will do all I need done, and both are good to 40yds. Broadheads will be Slick Trick or Magnus, with a CE - XT4's for trial use.

Bigreno
August 25, 2009, 02:47 PM
Yes, it is the Hostage rest and I do like it. I prefer it to the Whisker Biscuit because it doesn't make contact with the vanes and holds the arrow just as secure. When I first got the bow I considered swapping for a fall away rest but the Hostage seemed to work so well, I couldn't justify it. Once the brushes start to wear out I may switch then... or maybe not.

Above I said:

2008 Bear Instinct, w/ Easton 340s, .310, 10.0 gpi

or

2007 Liberty I, w/ Easton Epic 400s, .280, 8.7 gpi

or both. Both are set around 65#. Haven't decided on broadheads. Probably 100 gr Eastman First Cuts with the Liberty & 400s, and 125 gr 4-blade Muzzys or 125 gr Stingers with the Bear & 340s.

First, they are both 2007 models. Second, the Instinct is a 50-60 (I had forgotten), not 60-70. Third, I'm trading the 07 Bear Instinct today to my brother, for his 99 Hoyt Aspen 60-70 - he's gonna use the Instinct if he hunts. Fourth, bought some new arrows (Redhead Carbon 'Supreme Lites'). Fifth, due to my shoulder injury, I'm cranking everything down as far as I can. Sixth, since my Liberty will only crank down to 65, that means I'm probably going to hunt with the 99 Hoyt Aspen (set on 60 or less) rather than the Liberty - don't want to risk re-injury. Seventh, I had the weights backwards - the Eastman Outfitters "First Cuts" are 125 grain and the Magnus Stingers are 100 gr. Eighth, I bought some NAP Thunderhead 100s that were on sale.

So I'm in a state of flux. The new Redhead arrows shot very well with my Liberty and 100s before my injury. But going down to 60, gonna run with 125s first for testing as these are stiff arrows for a lower-mid poundage bow at this arrow length (29.75")(they are the "350" designation, made by Carbon Express I believe).

I don't know what's gonna shoot well in the Hoyt, but I'll probably hunt either with the 100 NAP Thunderheads (3 blade) or 125 4-blade Muzzys, depending up what weight shoots most accurately in the Hoyt. All this assumes I don't reinjure. :uhoh:

Gonna shoot some doves first next Tuesday then worry about resuming bow practice on Saturday the 5th.

Dr. T,

There are many "knappable" materials available. Some must be heat treated first....but others (Obsidian and some Cherts) are easily knapped just as you find them.

Any homogeneous material that can be made to Conchoidal Fracture is a candidate. That means you can make a projectile point from something as plain as an old Beer Bottle... to the more exotic... such as imported Blood Stone or Mookaite Jasper.

Some materials "work" better than others...but you "learn as go" the properties of each.

Hogs, Javelina, Deer, (one Bobcat), rabbits.

I've been bow-hunting (traditional archery) for 40 yrs. this season. But, I have only used (my own) knapped arrowheads for the last 15 yrs. (along with traditional steel points such as Zwickey's).

I honestly believe I get better penetration with the stone points than with steel.

A lot people scoff at it....but I can assure you they are deadly. If they weren't....neither you or I would likely be around to talk about it.

Its not for everyone...but I have had a lot of success (and fun) with it. I build my own strings, arrows, etc...

But....we are hijacking this thread...so back to the subject.

Very interesting; thank you. I want you to, from now on, also build you own tree stands and hog trap fences, and while you're at, sew your own buckskin clothing to hunt in! :p
