Hardness. Magnum shot is supposed to have more antimony in it (4%-6%) as opposed to chilled shot (2%).

The harder the shot, the less pellet deformation you'll get and therefore the tighter/more consistent your patterns will be.

About 10% in your pattern density. The magnum shot will pattern about 10% tighter with any given choke than the chilled shot. You can compensate for this by going one step tighter in choke(a modified choke with chilled will pattern about the same as IC with magnum) until you run out of choke.

Unless you shoot a lot of registered birds then I wouldnt waste the money . There is a difference in pattern density , but , this hasnt handicapped my recreational game . I reload shotshells for economy and I have a 1 oz pet load that has very low recoil , but , will still cycle a gas gun . When shooting registered loads I would personally buy factory 1 1/8 ozshells to compete with . Thats just my opinion .

Another difference-chilled will drop heavier grains in reloaders than magnum shot. It is because the chilled is mostly straight lead. Magnum has as much as 6% antimony or so. It is less dense.

I agree with the don't waste your money view--but in the opposite direction. Don't waste your money on chilled--pay the slight premium for magnum. Whether registering targets, clays for fun, or shooting doves, quail, etc., etc. you will always get better patterns and greater success with magnum shot. You simply handicap yourself (significantly) with chilled shot.
