i read somewhere long ago the 410 was a great survival gun because with a breach opening 410 you could fire other ammo, such as 45 long colts. of course you would need to saw off the end of the barrel where it is chocked down to .410. apparently behind this it is large enough for the 45 and possibly a 44 special. has anybody seen or done this?

If you cut off the end of a 410 shell - leave the wad intact - most anything you can get in the barrel will come back out with some sting on it.
41 mag shells worked, but I don't ever remember inspecting brass afterward.
Good old Mossberg bolt 410. First and BEST;) gun buy of my life. Seems like it came with 2 cases of shells for $45 - they said the red stock was ,"No charge"
DID IT when I was a highly unsupervised child.
After terrorizing the few sitters available - me and my 4 brothers had to stay out of trouble.
Good times...

What is the pressure difference between a 410 and a revolver cartridge. I would say that the revolver cartridge has way to much pressure for a 410 chamber to hold.

SAAMI .45 Colt is 14,000 PSI.
2 1/2" .410 is 12,500.
3" .410 is 13,500.

But it's not so much about the standard pressure ratings.

Unless the gun is built & chamber marked for .410/.45 Colt use, the .410" bore is undersize for the .454" bullet, and pressure can sky-rocket.

In short, don't do it!

Unless your gun says ".45Colt(Long Colt)/.410" don't try it...I have Super Comanche that shoots both well-- I do only fire Cowboy loads of .45 though, and not any screaming hot ones. .410 is ok-- mainly for fun and a pack gun when hiking for snakes.

the .410 at that barrel aint worth much---

H&R makes a gun called a Survivor in 45-410 .It has a fully rifled barrel for shooting the 45 colt and a special choke tube that is used to stop the shot from spinning when shooting 410 rnds. A 410 is a .410 bore a 45 colt is .452 .You should never even attempt to fire one out of a standard 410 shotgun barrel.
