Rep. Vernon Smith has introduced several pieces of potential legislation in the Indiana General Assembly that Hoosiers should be aware of.

First is HB1011 (http://www.in.gov/serv/lsa_billinfo?year=2003&session=1&request=getBill&docno=1011) an "assault rifle", machinegun and "machine gun ammunition" ban

Second is HB1014 (http://www.in.gov/serv/lsa_billinfo?year=2003&session=1&request=getBill&doctype=HB&docno=1014) which would cause all firearms conficated by law enforcement to be destroyed instead of auctioned off to dealers.

Third is HB1015 (http://www.in.gov/serv/lsa_billinfo?year=2003&session=1&request=getBill&doctype=HB&docno=1015) which prohibits the sale of firearms on county owned property. (gun shows)

Fourth is HB1016 (http://www.in.gov/serv/lsa_billinfo?year=2003&session=1&request=getBill&doctype=HB&docno=1016) which will raise the legal age to purchase handguns and "assult rifles" to 21, but also raise eligibility age for a concealed permit to 21 and limit handgun purchases to a max of 2 per calendar month.

Fifth is HB1017 (http://www.in.gov/serv/lsa_billinfo?year=2003&session=1&request=getBill&doctype=HB&docno=1017) which will require passing an "approved" firearms saftey course for a permit and before a handgun is transfered to a purchaser. It also reinstates the 7 day waiting period that was removed from Indiana Law after the background check system went live.

When I lived in Indiana, I got my first CCW at the county fair. They required no training to obtain the CCW either. Pay your fee and a week or so later it arrived in the mail.

It's a shame you always will have people trying to mess up a good thing.

One thing I didn't like about Indiana's CCW laws is, you can't even motion like you are going to draw a weapon or you are in violation of the law.

Don't let them term any gun an 'assualt weapon'. If you do, it will only be a matter of time before every firearm will be defined as an assult weapon. To them every gun is an assult weapon.

Looks like it right in the old manufacturing districts which was a pretty bad area last time I went through there on my way to Chicago.

Other than that I know little of Rep. V. Smith other than what I've found in the search engines (which doesn't set well with a Hoosier conservative like me).

Ban on assault weapons. Provides that the manufacture, importation, sale, or possession of ammunition for a machine gun, an automatic weapon, or a semiautomatic weapon is a Class C felony. Creates enhanced criminal penalties for a person who commits certain drug offenses while in possession of an automatic or a semiautomatic weapon.

Who is this joker? I spent some time reading all his proposed bills and found that he is not what I thought. He is conservative on some issues and liberal on others. It seems that every bill he sponsered or authored, I disagreed with.

I keep forgetting that Gary is part of IN. We are not proud of Gary and it is in no way a representative of the rest of IN. Gary may be one of the worst cities to live in.

In short, Vernon Smith is an idiot. Nothing he has forwarded will get out of committee. Never does. If memory serves we've seen this same crap from this inbred inner-city imbecile every year. I'll make some calls, as everyone should, but the winds would have to change a lot in Indiana before anyone pays attention to anything coming out of Gary.

I had heard about these bills being introduced by Vernon Smith. As a state representative from the Gary area, he's vehemently anti-gun, and as some of you have noted, he's introduced similar drivel for several years. I contacted my state representative, Jeff Thompson, who said not to worry, that Smith's bills are going to be dead on arrival, particularly with those of his own Democrat Party from the southern part of the state, who generally are supportive of the second amendment.
