What do I need to know about these pistols before I decide to purchase one.

CDNN is selling these brand new for around bill and a nice dinner.

Edit to add: this is going to be a beater gun. Will this suffice as a Trail gun for big 4 legged animals...bears, moutain lions etc.

You should know that you should never dry fire them. The firing pins are fragile and prone to breakage if they're dry fired.

check the firearm listings below first. i think a shop has quite a few of these for sale for the price of a bill, with magazines and a holster iirc.

I don't think the triggers are all that great. And the accuracy is guaranteed. For a play/plinking gun, though it's fun at the range. Not sure I would want to depend on it against critters bigger than me though. Don't trust mine enough for that. But it could just be mine.

They are a lot of fun to shoot. However there is not a wide variety of ammo to choose from and a 90 grain slug moving at 1700 fps will probably just piss a large animal off unless shot placement is perfect. Even if you can make a perfect shot when confronted with a angry bear it just won't have the penetration to reach much. You'd probably do better to quietly start slipping towards the nearest river/tree or whatever than to stand in a threatening manner and then give him owwies.

For a little more you can get a used .357 wheelgun which would be a far better choice for your chosen targets. Of course if you are really talking about an angry bear, even a black, then a handgun is a poor bet.

Just make sure you're always with a friend, not a good friend, just a friend. When the bear rushes you, take out your CZ52, shoot your friend in the leg, and run as fast and far as you can. You can always get another friend.

Doh....on the bear comment. I should have been more specific. A friend took me out to the range with it and had hot hot sub machine gun ammo and informed me that it had AP characteristics.............

There now with hot hot sub machine gun ammo in this pistol with the roller lock thingy in it now will it make bear stew. :D

...Firing Pin warning is dead on.

The trigger is STIFF.

The gun itself is very accurate, even out to longer distances.

Most shooters have some difficulty gaining a level of proficiency with it (this THR member included).

The value is terrific... www.makarov.com has some terrific accessories for it.

There are some, including a moderator on this Forum, who believe it has untapped potential for practical purposes.

I value it as a "shootable collectible"...lots of bang & flash. S&B is fairly readily available (CTD seems to consistently have the best price...about $8 a box + shipping).

I probably put more into it than I paid for it...I recommend it for what it is, and overlook its faults by doing so...

Bottom line, get one, I think you'll be happy you did.

Good luck!

...Surplus ammo' has been inconsistent at best for performance.

Best to use something like the S&B, especially at $8 per box for 50...
