Should I buy these?

A friend of mine has some nice revolvers he put in a gun case and forgot. They have some rust spots, but are otherwise in excellent shape. Here is the info I have at this point.
(If the model#s don't make sense sorry-his wife was reading them over the phone and I don't know enough to correct any mistakes.)

Colt Police Positive .38

S/W 19-4 4" barrel

S/W 29-2 44 mag.

S/W .22lr 17-5

S/W .38spl 14-3

S/W .357 19-5

S/W .38 10-6

S/W .32 30-1

S/W .32 702

As I said, they have surface rust. One of the worst is the 44mag. which is the close up picture. He will not sell them separately. It's all or nothing for $2400. Should I buy or pass? Please Advise!
Sorry about the picture quality. All I had was my phone. Thanks! Jim

To the right person you could easily make your money back. A couple of those guns would fetch $600+ each. I think the price is more than fair but if you are looking to make money on the deal it may take a little time. The - on the guns will hurt you a little since they are not original models but reproductions.

If that .44 shown is the worst, or even second worst, I believe I'd probably buy'em if I had the spare money.

Across the board you'd be looking at an average of $267 each. The lowest valued gun would not be much less than that, if at all less. While the most valuable could be considerably more.

Dollar wise, I think it would be a decent-good buy. Enjoyment wise, it'd be excellent.

Note to self- It's time to make some new friends, that don't know the value of any firearm they're wanting to sell. And that sell guns often. I can't name one friend of mine that has sold a gun in the last 10 years. All my friends are accumulators, not traders/sellers. It's time to find a new bunch to run with. One that I'm the only accumulator.

ETA-The - on the guns will hurt you a little since they are not original models but reproductions.

I don't see the dash model number detracting too much from the value. They are not reproductions, they're just slight model mods. (Kind of like A1, A2 etc. in US military firearms.) Each of these guns were still made by S&W and Colt. There's not a Uberti or Navy Arms in the bunch.

The only dash series that might detract from the value is if any are new enough to not have a pinned barrel (and recessed rim on the magnums). Collectors do value a pinned and recessed gun a little more. It may not hurt what you can get for it, but it would effect how long you have to sit on it.

This guy told me he has hundreds of guns- all for sale- whenever he can gather them from under the beds and in the closets. I wish I was more knowledgeable about values. There will most likely be more of these threads as he shows me the rest of his collection. I Must be able to resell some and at least break even or it's a no go with my wife.

Wow! Play your cards right, and you should be able to end up with several guns for no cost to you, after you sell off the others. Lucky dog.

It depends ---- how fast do you NEED to make back your investment ??

All in all , $2400 for all nine revolvers ain't a bad deal !!!

If you have more investment cash on hand ---- I'd try to make a better deal then on just those 9 guns.

EDIT ---- don't forget to add to him that you would REALLY LIKE any of the old boxes/paper work that came with them !!!

I would need to make it back pretty quick. ie closer to months than years.
If I can get him to split it up (doubtful) which ones do you all think would be the most valuable?

They have some rust spots, but are otherwise in excellent shape.

Depending on how bad these 'spots' are, $2400 may be top dollar for this group. All it takes is one very small spot of rust to turn a $600 gun to a $300 gun. With out some detailed photos it is impossible to determine the value of these.

Buy 'em but make sure you keep the Model 14.

Ditto on the buys.

That Police Positive is postively sweet.

YES. you could probably make half again what you will pay and still keep a few.
Just be careful of buying and selling toooo many as this construes being a dealer.

+1. $2400 could be a bargain for the lot; it could also be simply fair value depending on the condition that we can't see. For example, I'd say the 29 pictured in detail with the rust is a $300 gun.

Just be careful of buying and selling toooo many as this construes being a dealer.

I had that thought, too. The current environment is not too friendly for the grey area of what "dealing" is. I've heard it defined in some BATF letters as buying any gun with the intention of reselling it.

Ala Dan

Can you provide contact information for Deep Bluing Headquarters in Attalla, AL?

I have a gun that warrants a refinish and no local resources except (maybe) a paint job. I could hand carry it to Attalla and come out cheaper than Fedups.

Maybe you could wait a while. How many people will buy all of them at once. When he sees that, he may be more agreeable to splitting 'em up.

If the rust isn't that bad and is really only on the surface that's a great buy. If the rust is more than superficial you probably won't make your money back.

The M29-2 is fairly rare and worth well over $700 if in top condition. The two .32's and the Police Positive will probably fetch a good price from someone who is looking for them. Of course that all hinges on how deep the rust is. Be very careful if you buy that you don't get beat... You can sell them quick if you need to buy putting them on one of the gun auction sites.

As long as they're in reasonable working condition and you have the cash to spare, pounce on 'em. If you do purchase them, please PM me and make me an offer on one of the 19's.

Assuming there is slight pitting/rust on all the guns, but otherwise they are in excellent condition, here is my guess at worst case private party selling prices:

Colt Police Positive .38 - This is 38 S&W NOT 38 Special - $200

S/W 19-4 4" barrel - $350

S/W 29-2 44 mag. - $450

S/W .22lr 17-5 - $350

S/W .38spl 14-3 - $300

S/W .357 19-5 - $350

S/W .38 10-6 - $275

S/W .32 30-1 - $200

S/W .32 702 - (looks well worn pre-war) - $200

$2,675 total. Seems like a lot of work for a 10% savings if you only want a couple of the guns. I would pass unless the rust was really minor.

If they're pitted I say no way you make money, at least not enough to get a bunch of free guns. If only surface rust you could have reblued but even that detracts from the value of original.

If you buy the lot, I might be interested in the 17-5.

I have checked all available resources, and I can not find a reference for

If I had $ 2400,..and was that close by,...I'd have already written the check,..except I'd probably keep them. :-)

That's OK, Ala Dan, I have found a local shop to deal with the numerous guns needing refinishing after The Incident.
He actually subs out hot blue. He says he has the setup but he can now have it done by somebody else who works in volume easier than he can do it himself. He does rust blue, coatings, and stock finish in house. Thus far he has had three guns blued, and done one rust blue himself; and they all look fine. Of four stocks, one is ok, the other three are probably better than before they were smoked.
