Shipping Rifles and Shotguns

Can private parties ship rifles and shotguns to each other or must they be shipped like a handgun to an FFL holder?
Case in point, I want to ship a semi-automatic rifle from here in Florida to my son in Illinois, must I go through all the expense and bother of shipping FFL to FFL?

Sorry, you'll have to use an FFL for the transfer.
