Shotgun Butt Cuffs

Are they ambidextrous in the sense that the elastic cuff can be mounted on either side of the stock?

They move around under recoil some. I cut a hole in the one on my 10 gauge and stuck the rear sling swivel through it to anchor it. That seems to work.
I shoot lefty and have mine mounted on the left of the stock. I have one for my 20 gauge coach gun, also.

Yep, they're pretty simple little things and as such they're fairly versatile. Sure, they've got a few flaws as MCGunner noted, but they're cheap and handy. Sometimes if I don't want the added bulk of five shells on my stock I'll slip it onto my arm (yay for being skinny!) and carry my extra ammo that way.

What about those butt cuffs that have a strap that wraps around the recoil pad preventing it from sliding around?

I just loosened the recoil pad, rolled the edge of the butt cuff over the end of the stock... and the tightend down the recoil pad. Now the butt cuff is rock solid!

Can any one post a link to where I can buy them from or picture. Do you mean the extra 5 shell carrier on the butt?
Thanks

I like the neoprene ones better than the elastic version. They seem to fit snugger and are a little more durable. They also create a more comfortable cheek weld on a synthetic stock.

I like these Ace Butt Cuffs from CTD specifically because of that elastic strap. They stay put better than the ones without it:

I've got one of those:

It stays put just fine and allows me to shoot from my support side shoulder without any trouble - though I don't put a round in the very first shell loop.
Note that it appears to be sized for a standard LOP stock. I use something in the neighborhood of 12.5-13", and the cuff is a little long for that.

Midway has the elastic ones for about $5.00.

Hell. My Wal-Mart (dare I say it) has buttcuffs for rifles and shotguns as well as 25rd ammo belts for both. Cheap, but they do their job...

Slightly off topic, but you can also get a plastic sidesaddle that attaches to the receiver. More of a permanent solution. I like mine, but it does add some weight and bulk to the shotgun. I wouldn't use it for a field gun, but for home defense it's great. I always have extra shells handy and ready. Also, I've found that the elastic ones wear out over time due to being under constant strethc and dry air, etc.

The cheaper butt cuffs do wear out, but at $5 a pop who cares. I have some that are 10-12 years old and are still doing fine. IMHO they are far superior to side saddles as they do not affect the lateral balance of the weapon, and they do not get in the way of reloading, AND they are readily detachable-side saddles are not. I usually anchor mine using the sling swivel and they are very usable.
The folks who tout side saddles usually like the tacticool look, you will find very few pros using side saddles, they usually carry their extra ammo on the body somewhere, just like extra ammo for every other weapon. And of course side saddles tend to get expensive, at least the ones that work and hold shells firmly do.

Do you have to cut a hole for the rear sling swivel or does it come with one pre-cut?

I cut my own, didn't see a hole. Nothing a snip with a pair of scissors or a poke with a knife can't fix.
I'm a right handed shooter have mine holding the shells on the left side brass down. Makes it quicker feeling for me to reload into the tube with my left hand.
This reminds me I need to pick up a couple more for the other shotguns.
Edit: think I might try finding some for the rifles too.

What about those butt cuffs that have a strap that wraps around the recoil pad preventing it from sliding around? I ended up buying a 25 round belt because the shell holder I got for the stock was all over the place...to the point of distraction.
The belt is great. barely even noticeable and I certainly dont use 25 rounds during any given day out. Not yet anyway. :)

I have a $5 Allen butt cuff for my Mossberg Mariner HD shotgun. I also poked a hole it in so the sling swivel holds it in place. To prevent the hole from fraying I smeared some household cement around the edges of the hole.
If the elastic goes after a few years I'll replace it. For $5 or so it's not a big deal.
A Side Saddle is not an option for me, since I secure my shotgun in a Mossberg Loc-Box, which locks around the action.

I have one for rifle rounds I put on my off wrist/forearm when I'm deer hunting with my .30-30 Contender. Sure makes reloads quick. :D
