Boo on underlugs!

Other than cheaper machining costs, what good are barrel length underlugs? Want a Python? Get a Python.
Me, I'll take the extra weight in a longer barrel.
And the weight only makes em harder to pack.

Old worn out subject. Been covered here and there repeatedly.
If you don't like them, don't buy them.
Try writing an expose on how a 4" barreled .357 with a full underlug barrel, feels and shoots in comparison to one with a standard half lug.
That might be worth reading.

Don't like them either.
Think they look like hell.
As for old and tired out argument/discussion, hell if that were the criteria, about 95% of this entire forum would be gone...

thin walled and screw capped where you could add weight if you wanted............
........they would BEND and then we could have another worn out old topic to start.

The free enterprise system is one of the things that makes this country great! If you don't like them, don't buy them. Should enough people feel that way and express their vote by not purchasing, they will eventually disappear from the market. On the other hand, there's enough normal people purchasing them (and liking them) to, I hope, encourage the manufacturers to keep them in the line up forever!
Long live the full underlug, at least in Smiths and Rugers!!!!!!

Now if they were HOLLOW
thin walled and screw capped where you could add weight if you wanted
Actually, that's a very good idea. There are times when I'd want the extra weight at the muzzle, and others when the arthritis would object.

You know Mike, when I read that I got a real good laugh. Actually I figure I read maybe 5% of what is available here. I really only visit three of the fourms regularly, but if they were gone it sure would be a dry place.
Sorry for my wise crack, I guess I got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

Yup, It has been hashed a bit so much so that I went ahead and ground off the underlug on my 586 and I feel that it is a much handier handgun now. My 586 handles very well and seems like a model 19 on steriods.

I think they look nice. I don't think their are any real pros and cons otherwise. The diffeence in weight is not enough to worry about. It if bothers you. Try working out.

If you're into... never mind. As Fitz instructed, strike with the cylinder and not the barrel.

All I say is if you like more muzzle weight, a longer barrel does it. AND improves the ballistics too.
Up to 4" (silly length for a .357....flames flames) the weight doesn't matter much, but get a 6 incher with that lug and it no longer balances nicely.
For me.
Besides, my wrist that I got from shooting a 4" M29 doesn't like holding up a lot of muzzle anymore.

"Up to 4" (silly length for a .357....flames flames)"
Its just the right size for carry.

The answer is a 686 Plus Mountain gun with 4" tapered barrel. As I said it before in another thread, my favorite .357.

Four inch bbl is just about right for a .38 Special. But I would want a longer barrel for any magnum.
Perhaps 5" would be a good compromise?

I like the S&W revolvers both ways. I love the balance of the 5" 629 Classic (full underlug).

I try not to be a bigot. I like them all.
I have a few with a full underlug. Ruger GP-100, S&W 686 (8 3/8"), S&W Model 617 (6"). Then I have a few dozen without. I won't be getting rid of any of them anytime soon.
Then in the interest of equal opportunity for the barrel length community, I have them from 2" out to 8 3/8".

A 4-inch S&W Model 17 with full underlug handles about like an older Model 17 with no underlug and a 2x scope. There are target stocks on both of them, too. (If I want to shoot a skinny gun I'll shoot the Single-Six)
I really like the balance of the 6-inch Python, but have never carried one. That job always went to a 4-inch Police Service-Six.
