sights way off

this seems to be a problem far to common with me. I took my 500 s&w to sight it in correctly(previously just fired it at rocks 100 or so yards away) and discovered it shoots 8 inches too high at 50 yards. so I attempted to correct it just to discover it is already shooting as low as the sights will allow. so how do I adjust it? I had the same problem with my 10/22 rifle, so I scoped it, but I really hadn't planned on doing that to my revolver. I like the open sites, so any suggestions on what I should do? Would changing the sites out do anything?
thanks in advance for any responses
on a side note I just found a bfr in 45/70 for $700 shipped that I will be purchasing, so updates to come on that sooner or later:D.

You need a taller front sight to get into the adjustment range of the rear sight. They say the front sights are interchangeable, so it won't be much trouble.
I don't know the sight radius so I can't do the trigonometry for you to figure out how much taller.

Is this a full-power load, or a reduced load?
I had the same experience with a long-barrel .44 Magnum.

I was shooting the inexpensive(laugh, like any rounds for this gun are inexpensive) HSM 300 grains. I wouldn't think it would make that much of a difference at 50 yards, but I haven't looked at the ballistic/trajectory tables.

I found a couple trajectory tables with some faster more powerful loads in the similar weight class, and by all rights it should only make an inch or so of difference at that distance(if even that much), and in the lower direction, opposite of my problem. if anything the loads i was shooting should hit lower than the others.
Also, would anyone happen to know if its ok to mirror polish the x frames? I really am not fond of Smiths "satin finish" looks more like someone dragged it through a gravel pit.
