Ring of Fire

I found these photos on another site. The firearm pictured is a Desert Eagle Mark XIX .50 AE and according to the shooter he was firing reloads purchased from the range.
Out of all the shooting I have done over the years I don't think I have ever seen a ring of fire like this before.

Cool.
For you reloaders out there, is there something you can add to the powder to produce pyrotechnics?

Hi guys i'm a new guy, son of professer and brother of gus.
This is my first post and that's wicked. :D I haven't seen anything that cool out of any of our guns.
But i think a little Magnesium could change that. Just don't tell me dad.

From my semester of fluid mechanics, I'd assume its caused by the lower pressure behind the quickly moving bullet, drawing in air from around the pistol, that causes the ring to form in the eddys.
Awesome set of pictures.

I have a .50 AE Desert Eagle and I can tell you exactly what causes it.
32.0 gr of H-110 pushing a 325 gr Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point :D
Sorry, had to be a smart ???. You want a "crowd pleaser" load as Kamicosmos likes to call them you need to load up the H-110. Fun stuff.

H-110 does a similar flame front from my .30 Carbine Blackhawk on a humid day. For that matter, it'll do it on most days and solve your mosquito problems too.
Seems to be pretty common from my experiences with H-110.

Rabbit.

But i think a little Magnesium could change that
It could also change the barrel into a non-functional melted piece of steel.

Poor Professr
Needs an off-site storage for his toys...
lessee, we have Gus, her fiance' and now a son...
How about you sell the boy to finance the wedding. This way you protect guns and can pay for wedding...just helping :p
Maybe if you give Gus the Glock 19 the boy can move in with them after the wedding...
think smarter not harder I say...

Hey Son of a Gun,
Was that picture taken, by chance, at Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly, Virginia?

My friends will do that with Win. 296 (I think). It's a sight to see a ring of fire about a foot in diameter and three feet long come out of the end of the barrel.:what:
My .454 with 31grs of H110 won't even do that.

Sorry there re1973 if you sold me to pay for the wedding there wouldn't be enough.
I wouldn't really put magnesium in the load cuz it would be to hot to hadle. Dad would make sure of that :(

I was thinking the range looked an awfully lot like On Target in Severn, MD. Which if it is the guy's in trouble for firing something over .44 mag there.
Any chance you could give us the site you picked em up off of so we can check it out?

The smaller caliber Desert Eagles will also generate the rings. I've seen the .50 produce 3 of them in one blast!
My .357 doesn't do the rings very often, but every now and then it'll throw one out. Mostly just a huge fireball.
I'm not sure why the DE's generate the rings though. The exact same load of H110 that makes rings in the DE just makes big fireballs out of a Marlin 1894, Contender, and Redhawk.
It's almost like the fireball comes first, then the bullet passes through it, but that's impossible.

I don't think it is Blue Ridge Arsenal. the lane numbers in the pics are on the dividers, whereas Blue Ridge has theirs on the motors for the target carriers. Other than that it would be a dead ringer for BR.

While looking at the picture again I have to also cancel out my guess as to what range it is. While On Target puts their numbers on the side like that lane 8 just isn't that close to a wall on its left.
