Taurus pt-22 Question

Considering purchasing this gun but as it doesn't lock open after the last round I assume you must count shots, (Taurus says you can't dry fire this gun- not that it's unusual for a 22) Is this correct?

I have one, and do count my shots. It does say not to dry fire if I recall correctly. Anyway, it is a neat little pistol. The trigger takes some getting used to, but it is pretty accurate. They also discourage using hyper ammo in it.:( I like the tip-up barrel.

Yep, counting is the plan. I've miscounted numerous times though:o no damage yet, but can assume it's not good for it.
Now to stick my nose in where it was not requested ;)
I bought one thinking it to be something to carry when I didn't want to carry a gun. But to be honest I really don't consider the it reliable enough for even that. I run into one failure to extract every 50 rounds or so and on a gun with no extractor this is kind of a serious problem (gotta poke or pick out the stuck case). It's also not a really strong gun, Taurus does not reccomend Hyper-Velocity loads in it which means it's not exactly durable even for a .22.
Mines sitting in the closet with really no place to go. No real role for it, too cheap to bother with the trouble to sell online.
YMMV, but I think my money could have been spent better elsewhere.

Hey cline, welcome to THR!
Mike Irwin has one that's (IIRC) over 3k with no prroblems. I had one and sold it - had some reliability issues.
I wouldn't worry about the dry fire issue and running out of ammo. IMHO, the warning is for folks who dry fire bunches. Eventually the firing pin will break as it hits the chamber.

I had one but only for a few weeks till it literally fell apart while I was shooting it. Then I had to send it back and wait and wait and wait. When it finally came back I traded it. In the short time I had it I shot it allot and accuracy was fair for such a small gun. I wish it would have worked out. If you like revs, the Taurus 94 9 shot is a much better gun IMO. I’ve had mine for quite awhile now and it’s a keeper. I did buy the 2nd Taurus through Davidson’s so if I do have problems with it I deal with Davidson’s not Taurus CS.

Yep, I've had one for some years now, with somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 rounds of Winchester Wildcat through it.
So far, with the WC, it's been absolutely flawless.
It had some issues with CCI Blazer, though.

I have one in my pocket right now. I have never had a prob. with it. I use cci standard velocity in it but have used win. wild cats and Rem. lightenings also. I think that when I first got it I put a couple dozen high velocities through it. Bereta makes nice pocket autos also.

I had one that could not get through a mag of any type of ammo I tried. I sold it.
It was a nice gun in configuration but it wasn't worth the time to send it back to Taurus.

I have one. It had a few failures to extract the first 200 rounds but after that has been no trouble. I haven't kept track of how many rounds I have through it but it's around 1000. Last time I took it to the range I ran ~150 rounds through it. I had one failure to fire. I popped the barrel up, rotated the round 90 degrees, and pulled the trigger again. It fired. Obviously the round was the problem.
I carry it sometimes in the heat of the summer when it's too dadgum hot to cover anything else. I count rounds but don't worry much. If the firing pin breaks, it breaks and I'll replace it. I don't sit around and dry fire it.
If you are very worried then how about loading the mag with a snap cap at the bottom, that way you won't run completely empty. Anyone do this on a regular basis?
