I can't recall where else I read this about this happening, so I just wanted to get some feedback. The heaviest load I've shot out my a1 so far is a Remington 2 3/4" slugger...which is not all that heavy. When I do, invariably the action upon ejection would stiffen up bad. It wasn't impossible but it wasn't butter smoothe either. This is the only pumpgun I've ever had that's done this, even in the break in-stage...what's up? Like I said, I know I read somewhere else of this happening in an a1 too. It's a little alarming in the fact that I'm a firm believer in full power buckshot as a defense load and wouldn't want to wrassle with the forend in a high stress situation. It could be done, but as they say, "speed kills".

That can't possibly be so- that only happens to 870 Express guns... :D
Seriously, give your chamber a good cleaning. And if it's still happening, try some different brands of slug loads and see if they work better. If it happens with heavy loads across the board, it could be your chamber needs polishing.
Hey, it happens.

Thanks Lee. I'll give it a go this weekend and see how the guns acting. Going to put some 3" through it, and some other slugs. And then some of the normal 2 3/4" I'll be using.

anybody have a "chamber polishing for dummies" thread they link me to? I've kinda skimmed over the 870 express chamber issue, but I've had 870 Expresses and they didnt get stiff upon ejection like my Mossberg did, it was more a matter of the shell hanging up in the bolt. I want to make sure I don't mess anything up on my barrel if I need to polish the chamber because I've never done it before. thanks again.

May as well take a look at your mag tube and see if you're scoring it on the pump. Probably not what's giving you trouble, but I once owned an 870 whose fore end tube had weakened, and was intermittently pinching the mag tube. Had to replace the bolt carrier along with it.

dunno if this means i have a "polished" chamber, but I stuck my index finger in the chamber and I've NEVER felt a smoother chamber. it's like glass....

After slugs, clean. I learned that with my M500, pretty much the same gun.

I've had that happen to me twice on my 590. I still haven't found a remedy, but the only time it bound up pretty tight was with 00 3" magnum loads. It got a little sticky with the remington slug rounds, but it seems like the chamber is pretty smooth.

I actually cleaned and polished the barrel last night using just bore patches. No stiffening today whatsoever.

Well, since no one else asked but everyone seems to know what you mean....perhaps you could enlighten us know-nothings? What do you mean by "stiffen up"?

when i first got it, it would fire the heavy base loads and upon extraction would be really stiff and sluggish...ejection rearward would take extra effort. it seems to have levelled out though.

I am an advocate of cleaning after each trip to the range. Maybe the Corps has me too much into cleaning but it seems to me that in this case it appeared to be the issue, no?

Oh, me too. I always clean. Even if I only take one shooting. and I'll clean every few months even if it hasn't been shot. I think it just needed to be worked a little more. I've hit the 200 rd mark now glitch-free. It wouldn't stick...just was a little stiff on the rearward motion.

What do you mean by "stiffen up"?
I believe what he means is the action is very hard to work, harder than normal. I neglected to clean my gun after some slug loads and probably a hundred target loads. The result was the next time I went to use it, it felt as if the action was jammed and I had to really YANK it to get it open. I only shot 4 shells and then put the gun away until I could tear it down. After the tear down and oil the gun functions flawlessly.

Yeppers, Alexe, I figured that....just his description vs the suggested "fixes" seemed to be coming from two different fields.
Why would a slug cause an action to get sticky if the same exact thing in a 2 3/4" shot shell didn't? Why would he need to polish his chamber if it already was? Why would cleaning it fix it if it already was clean? See my point?
The "power" of a shell, being a slug vs a shot shell, won't cause sticking of any kind any worse than the shot shell would.

RandKL is right...but it really did happen!?!? It seems to be smoothing things up a bit. To be fair, the only higher power load I had shot prior to today was the sluggers that made it get sticky. Everything else was reduced low-brass sellier and bellot number 1 buck or 7.5 shot. I shot strictly 00 buck and slugs today and it performed great.

I believe it did happen, AUN. I'm just saying the fixes and the prob seem to bear no relation to each other. Guns will always have probs....they're made by humans and humans are fallible. I completely believe it happened, just that the 590 isn't prone to any sticking probs like that. The 500 is well-proven and there's been no changes like the Express.
Given your symptoms, though, it sounds like your barrel might not have been socked down tight in the receiver. Recoil binds the barrel breach/bolt, you get sticky pumping. Remove the barrel and replace it....nothing else needed....fixes the prob so you think it's something else.
