There are sooooooooo manyyyyyyyyyyy different types of scopes on the market today how can a novice like myself learn more about them?

Fixed Power, Variable 1 Power, Variable 2 Power , Variable 3 Power, Variable 4 Power, Variable 5 Power, Variable 6 Power, Variable High Powers add to that all these scope numbers: 1.1-4x24mm, 4-16x50, 4.5-14x42mm, 2.8-10x44mm, 2.5-10x50mm, 5-15x40mm, 5-15x50mm, 8.5-25x50mm, 8.5-25x50mm, and the list goes on and on and on! Then add the countless number manufacturers who make scopes it becomes mindboggling and next to impossible for a novice to select a scope.

I’m looking for a site which could give me the A,B,Cs of scopes (the basics) before I go any further on “what to buy”.

This page has a ton of detailed reviews on specific scopes, but there are also some broader articles that will break down the basics as well. I've learned quite a bit from this website. A good all-around source of information.

Good to see someone who wants to learn about scope basics. Benchrest web sites are good places to read up on scopes. Example http://www.6mmbr.com/optics.html

I like optics planet, it helped me sort out which scopes I wouldn't buy based on price and reviews. I dont know much about optics in general but its nice to know you can buy a scope under $100 thats getting 4 and 5 star reviews ^_^

p.s. the two brands I like so far are Barska and NCStar, although I know very little about them they appear to be quite good and affordable in some cases

I am certain that we can help if you give us a few guidelines (budget, use, range, caliber, rifle, et cetera)...other than that Optics Planet is a great place to do a bit more research.

AZA, good luck with the Barska and NCStar, my experience with these two has shown their performance to be less than exemplary. :)

im kinda fond of SWFAI wouldn't buy any more optics if they were the only venue available...they discredit other authorized retailers in order to drum up more business. Scott at Liberty Optics has great service and outstanding prices on mid-high end optics, and he saved me about $650.00 (on one scope) over the price that SWFA quoted...nuff said.
