In the chart Murder, Types of Weapons Used, the Northeast has the lowest murder by firearm rate. Consequently, the Northeast has, by far, the highest murder rate by knives or cutting instruments.

It's that they DIDN'T die by evil evil guns.

Dying from kitchen implements is perfectly OK.

Oh, yeah, and it's nobler to die by kitchen implement when you're defenseless.

Had they not died by kitchen implement, say by driving off with their attacker with a handgun, well, then they'd be robbed of their victimhood status, wouldn't they?

Where's the empowerment in that?
