This picture appeared on the front page of th NY Times today. In the paper it is much clearer than here. My apologies. The GI on the right has a revolver in his right rear pocket. Is that a POW (privately owned weapon) or an issued weapon? Caption says that they are 4th ID soldiers, not special ops of any type. Does the 4th ID now issue revolvers?

Not that this is the case, but dont the SEAL's use stainless S&W .357"s on occasion?

The SEALs do still have Smith 686 six shot revolvers in their inventory and apparently use them in very silty water.
At least this was the case a couple of years ago.

As have soldiers since the beginning of organized warfare. However, we're more "civilized", now. Sure, we'll incinerate enemy cities with fire bombs and nukes, burn their soldiers alive with napalm, rip them apart with machine gun fire, run them over with tanks...
...but by golly we won't have our soldiers taking home war trophies. Units can do it, but individuals can't. 'Cause that'd be...well, that'd be just plain wrong, obviously...
To answer your question, no. In fact, you can get into a heap of trouble by trying to bring home a war trophy. Think Fort Levanworth (sp?).

In WWI and II it was OK to bring back enemy property and weapons (with some restrictions) but not allied weapons (Dutch or French, for example). Since we are supposedly "liberating" a friendly Iraq, not conquering an enemy country (coulda fooled me), we can't take any souvenirs of any kind.

"Is that a POW (privately owned weapon) or an issued weapon?"
Carried like that I would guess that it had just been confiscated and the soldier put it in the most easily accessable place he had. Ordinary soldiers are not normally allowed to have personally owned firearms while on duty.

In the 80's(thru Desert Storm) motorcycle scout troops had revolvers. The US Gubbamint is currently issueing Colt MK III .357's to Iragi ;s police . Somehow we came up with 20,000 of these in inventory , no holsters though.

I saw that too -- looks like a Ruger GP series, with the wood inserts in the rubber grips... maybe a 3"

Only general officers and admirals can bypass rules and regs and bring back full auto AK's, Cuban cigars, etc.
I remember one admiral brought back a bunch from our intervention in Haiti. Think it was a couple dozen presentation grade full auto AK's. CNO had a little talk with him. Could only keep 1.
Now if an EM tried that, he'd be breaking rocks at Leavenworth for the next 100 years.
