I found a Smith and Wesson lower at a good price to me( $160.00) delivered any reason not to choose the smith and look for a DPMS or RRA?

I would pass at that price. Just seen Spikes Tactical lowers at gun show this weekend for 100.00 OTD.

I hear good things about the S&W. I have a Kaiser Defense. Spikes is supposed to be good, too, as is RRA and others. The magic is in the upper (and the trigger -- Geissele for me).

S&W>RRA>DMPS

I will say that most lowers tend to be pretty good but I have an aversion to anything DPMS and S&W makes a nicer overall gun. So I would lean towards using their lower as well on a build.

My DPMS lower is perfect, why the aversion?

I have owned a number of DPMS rifles. None of them worked well, Bad Chambers, a broken FSB, Broken stocks, Out of spec Top Rail. Not to mention the general lack of QC they have.

The lowers I have had were not as well "finished" as others. I am not talking about the Parker job. I mean the final machining was much rougher than on any RRA, Colt, S&W or even Bushmaster I have had. Lots of flash, etc. One stripped lower I purchased was so bad that it cut the web of my hand till I put a MIAD grip on it.

Look here: M4 Chart (http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pwswheghNQsEuEhjFwPrgTA&single=true&gid=5&output=html) and see where DPMS compares to other brands.

That said, I own a DPMS.

And a S&W M&P15T. There's a comparison, but it's not a good one.

Its just a stripped lower--the name on the side means little---what matters is what you put in it.

thanks everybody just to let you know i went with the spikes tacticle lower it was 89.95 on special for september. next is the trigger kit. I want tobuild my own ar if that was not obvious. I have one that a friend gave me thats right gave me. these rifles seem easy enough to build but the trigger instalation will probably be the hard part. I dont know if I want to build my own upper or just order it whole. I feel confident i can do it but need to buy the tools to do the job right. if i am going to build more ars this would be an investment.all that said i am up in the air on what barrel to get. im thinking 18'' mid wieght optic ready maybe iron sight dont know let me know what you think
