I'm thinking of using the TBBCs on a Grizz/Moose hunt. The Bear would be shot at less than 100yds but the Moose may be as far as 200yds. At 100 yds the 416 round velocity is about 2050fps and at 200yds about 1850fps. What is the threshold velocity for a good expansion for this bullet?

While I don't know the exact figure, I am quite certain Speer designed the .416 TBBC to expand and work quite well far past 200 yards.

I'm also not sure Speer still sells TBBC bullets as reloading components, as there are none listed on their website anymore.
I believe they have been discontinued.

TBBC have been relegated to Factory Federal Ammo with a tipped version of the TBBC, they are no longer available as a component. So, my suggestion is stock up when you can find them or go look for another bullet. I would really suggest looking at Barnes offerings.

Indeed, Federal is loading this bullet and has also modified it with a polymer tip and now has added the Trophy Bonded Tip to its lineup. However the TBBC is still available in their Cape Shock line for large and dangerous game. Furthermore, I've read that the original Jack Carter design using copper has been revised with the use of guilding material an easier alloy to manufacture for it is more maleable and easier to clean off the machinery. The Barnes bullet is a fine one too, but the velocity window for best upset, is limited; too fast and the petals sheer off; too slow and the bud is barely opening. Great penetration but loosy enegy transfer at both ends of the spectrum. So, my question still remains to be answered.

Seems like you ought to contact the tech people at Speer for the information you want!

How would the Nosler Partition compare to the TBBC?
