I decided to invest a little time and do a little riggin on my 702 Plinkster. For a total cost of $20 and change, I did the following;

9 round Buttstock ammo carrier: I cut out every other sewed thread on the carrier so I could securely place 4 spare mags in it.

A Swivel & Swivel Stud Set I installed along with a cheapo Sling.

And here's the results;
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5259/plinkster3.jpg

I love this gun by the way, probably because its been reliable as hell and I could care less about it gettin nicked up and beaten around in my truck!

Has anyone else taken the time to customize their 702 Plinkster at all?

Very nice. I like the magazine carrier. As you can see, great minds think alike.

I like it. The ones you carry with you, the ones that live in trucks instead safes, they are the real rifles.

Looks good to me; how does it shoot?

how does it shoot?

I can hit any target dead on if it's less than 50 or so ft away. If the target is farther than that...........wellll I've developed quite the intuition in guestimating how high i need to hold the rifle over to ping the target.

And in the small chance my guestimating does me wrong at long distance, I am always able to walk the .22's into the target by at least the 3rd or 4th trigger pull.:)

p.s. I've also probably put close to 10,0000 rounds through it. It was my first gun I ever bought when I was 18 and now i'm 24.

You have about as much invested in magazines as you paid for the rifle!

Nice idea with the buttstock carrier. I have a 702 I am well pleased with. You'll find that the gun is more accurate than you are over time.

Nice Rifle, goes along with my thinking here.

I've thought for some time now when I get a .22 Rifle I'm going to customize the heck out of it. There honestly is alot of utility in .22LR but they are cheap rifles, so to me it seems like a good platform to try stuff with (outside of airsoft but thats another discussion), and if I like it, then the mods may move on to the bigger rifles in the collection. If I don't like it or damage the gun, well its not an expensive gun anyway so who cares?

Nice rifle bro. Those 702's are a hoot aren't they? Sweet little shooters. I bought one for my youngest brother for his 18th. That rifle prompted me to buy my 817.

Nice. One thing you might consider is putting the mags in upside down from how you have them in the photo.

That way you pull them out from under the stock, rather than trying to reach over it while shouldered. Seems like it would be easier to change mags that way.

If the loops are tight should be no problem with the mags falling out.

Hey Cleetus.

I am kind of a Mossberg man too...I have a 590 12ga and really like it.

So how hard/easy is it to break down and thoroughly clean the plinkster? Some .22 semi's are next to impossible and some are not so bad.

I really like your rig a lot.

Hey Jubjub.

Nice looking rifle there. I really like the peep sight. How hard was that thing to put on there? I have a Model 60 and want to do same. I know they make them for the Model 60. I know also that you have to put on a taller front sight. Did all that give you much trouble?

Thanks.

I don't really bother to clean this rifle very often. Detailed stripping was confusing the first time I did it (forgot which way that red recoil buffer thingy went). But after you learn the 1st time it becomes a cinch.

p.s. if a company were to make a high cap mag for this gun they would be the greatest company in the WORLD!

Those sights are from XS, and they come as a set. Easy to install. The rear sight just screws in the rear set of scope base holes, and the front sight was no trouble to replace, just a few taps with a brass punch. What was by far the most trouble was the Marble's dovetail filler in the rear sight dovetail. It was a bit oversize, and took some fitting. On mine the provided front sight was fine, though with my setup the rear sight is pretty close to bottomed out.

I don't think XS makes sights for the Marlin, but Tech-Sights does. They are sold as a set, and are easy to install. The front sight is screw mounted on the Marlin, so you don't even need a punch.

Thanks Jubjub

Yeah it was the Tech-Sights I was thinking about. My eyesight isn't what it used to be and I find increasingly that peep sights suit me much better. I don't want to bother with optics on most of my rifles as I don't shoot much at long ranges.

Thanks for the info. Good thread. I think 22 lrs are great guns and we don't talk about them enough in favor of higher powered firearms.

Neat gun. I always liked PRACTICAL additions to .22 rifles, compared to the madness and mayhem, tactical and tacticool stuff folks do to 10/22s. Want to impress me? Make a gun up like yours Cleetus! :) Its practical, semi-tactical and everything looks easy to use/load/present.

You have given me a BIG idea! :D TO THE STORE! :D

Cleetus,
I found this site and your posting and have some questions...

1. It looks like the the rear sling swivel goes through the Butt-sleeve mag carrier, is that what you did?

2. There also seems to be some sort of band on the front swivel, what did you do there?

3. I'm also curious if you can tell me the brand of sling you put on the rifle.

I'm adding to your recipe a scope with see through rings... a bread and butter rifle for sure... I picked up mine at the local Wally world before the terrible pressure of propaganda cowered the Waltonians to bend and break under the pressure of the evil and stopped selling guns. Under $100!!!!

I got one about a year ago for teaching kids, (9~13yrs olds) basic shooting. It was the best deal I ever got from Dicks sporting goods. The price was 89.95 with a little scope included. When I got to the checkout they rang it up at 59.95. I didn't didn't say a word, and walked out with a nice Plinkster with a scope for a little over 60.00. :D

I was looking at one of those for an inexpensive .22 as a gift
for somebody. I bought a gsg-c for plinking and think it's cool. Do they make hi cap mags for the mossberg?

1. It looks like the the rear sling swivel goes through the Butt-sleeve mag carrier, is that what you did?
Yup, tapped a hole in the butt and forearm and twisted the swivels right on in. Applied some JB weld to the front for a more secure hold.

2. There also seems to be some sort of band on the front swivel, what did you do there?
Dont pay attention to that...:o It's a black zip tie when I lost the front forearm screw. Needless to say, I replaced the screw with one from Lowes, and the ziptie was promptly cutoff. It now free-floats again.

3. I'm also curious if you can tell me the brand of sling you put on the rifle.
The cheapest one from Wal-Mart which I believe was $8.97 or something.

Hey cleetus how did you manage to buy alot of magazine clips?
Fortunately for me.....I acquired the Magazines from Wal-Mart last year on a ridiculous clearance they had for $7 a pop. I so wish I would of bought more as they no longer sell rifle mags in my area wal-mart.

What size ammo carrier did you use?
A $5 9 rd rifle carrier bought from gander mountain.

Any other providers out there that make a decent sight for a 802?(702 and 802 are the same sight mounting right?)

Your best bet would be to pose your question in a new thread. This one started over a year ago and may not get your question much attention.
