Grandfather left me this pistol with V365859 printed on the bottom.
Can you tell me what it's worth?

Tommygunn is right, but I'll take a shot at it.

The marking on the side of the barrel, combined with the "V" prefix before the serial number on the butt, indicates that it's a Smith & Wesson Victory Model made between 1942 and 1945. But beyond that I can't say, and without knowing if it's completey original or not - as well as its present condition, no one can put a value on it. I would expect a U.S. Government Property marking of some sort would be stamped on the topstrap along the rear sight groove. The stocks should be made out of plain, uncheckered walnut, ant it should have a matt (sandblasted) Parkerized finish. A lanyard loop should be on the butt.

So?

All that means is, you have a revolver chambered for the .38 S&W Special Cartridge.
CTG = the abbreviation for Cartridge.
Nothing more, nothing less.

It tells us nothing at all that helps with I.D.ing the gun, except it's a .38 Special.

Old Fuff told you all there is to tell in post #3 without more information or photo's.

I have a Victory Model but it's 38 S&W . It had never been fired when I bought it for $100 bucks. I take it they made them in both chambers then.

To this day the Victory model is a very enjoyable shooting collectible, mainly due to its inexpensive cost, light recoil, and good accuracy.

Good posts. I always learn something at THR.

Like the first revolver in this thread, the value depends on (1) Is it entirely original, with the same parts and finish that were there when it was made? (2) How much of the original finish remains, and are the chambers and bore free of corrosion? Are there U.S. Government property and other marks stamped on it?

Depending on the answers the value is most likely between $175.00 to $500.00. That's not very helpful, but without more photographs and/or information there is no way to determine a precise value. Something as simple as a particular marking can literally add or subtract as much as $100 of the gun's net worth.
