I would like to purchase an old style (wild west type) looking revolver, but am wondering if any models are made in SA/DA and if so what brands and model names should I be looking for.

I would like something with less than a 6" barrel, but it seems everything I find is SA only and the ones that don't indicate SA or SA/DA I can't tell by the model names.

Does a gun like this exist or are all the older models SA only.

I wanted something old west looking to take to the range for plinking only.

I'm lost and need help.....:(

Thanks

PS..the styles I'm looking for are like the old Colts and Rugers. I'm not thrilled with what I have found with the look of the S&W.

Even though the OP wrote he wasn't too enthusiastic with the S&W's he saw, a look at the older Model 17 might change his mind.

I had a Harrington & Richardson 650 that is a DA/SA. It loads and unloads like a S/A but to me never really looked like a S/A. Close, but not quite. For a real S/A look, I think (personally) you have to get a single action.

H&R 650.

Cool. Thanks guys!! The HR 650 looks nice.

Another dumb question, how does a SA revolver unload that is different than a DA. Does the cylinder not swing out so you unload one cartridge at a time?

Is there a good reference site someone can provide me to do some research on guns of the old west?

Here's a great starting primer on revolvers in general:

As Gik-Tal noted, the closest thing is the old High Standard Double Nine. It came in several barrel lengths and was also available with a bird's head grip as well as the standard plow handle grip. These were pretty durable guns and the action wasn't too bad.

But, if I wanted a gun that looked "western", I'd get a gun that operated "western". There is not a thing wrong with a single action revolver. With a little practice you will find that you can operate it with great speed. Plus, at the range you would probably use only the single action feature even if you had a double action gun.

Look for a Ruger Single Six with the 4.5" barrel. Really a sweet little gun.

Regarding your question. A single action revolver has a loading gate and an ejector rod. You push the empties out one hull at a time. Take a look at the H&R photograph. You'll see the gate just behind the cylinder and the tube on the lower side of the barrel houses the ejector rod.

Half the fun of a single action revolver is that it is a bit more challenging to shoot rapidly than a typical DA/SA revolver, but with practice and a bit of skill you can get get really good at it. Same goes for reloading, but once you get good at it, you can pop the shells out fast. For your needs, I'd recommend picking up a Ruger Single six in the 4 5/8 to 5 1/2" variety, although my 7.5" Hunter is a very accurate revolver.

Thanks for all the info guys. I didn't want to spend quite as much as the Ruger, for a plinker gun so I ordered a Heritage Rough Rider. It has the look and won't kill the bank account.
