The only problem that you are going to have, is the large ammo bill. The 686 just shoots to good. Great revolver.

-4's and -5's are among my favorite guns. There can be a lemon in every line but overall 686's are among the finest guns made.

The -4s are my favorites of all the 686 series. My 686-4 has been going strong for 15 years now with mostly magnum loads fired through it. Had it out just a few weeks ago and it still shoots as good as new.

Only that I do not have one... I would really like the 686-4 + that I saw for 600 at a local shop.

I have a 686-4 and a 586 no dash, both shoot better than I do. I do not recall seeing or hearing of any people having problems with a L frame, other than keeping it in ammo.

I purchased a new 686 4inch in 05. It was my first handgun and I bought it because of its tremendous reputation for reliability and accuracy. At that point I was not into shooting and just wanted a gun for home defense. The gun was great in all respects.
About 600 rounds in I had several failures to fire with various types of ammo. The firing pin was striking the primer but....nothing. So, it went from working perfectly to not working at all. I sent it back to Smith and they fixed the problem. They had the gun for 5 weeks. I don't know exactly what the issue was but the repair note said that they replaced the firing pin.
I have never heard of anyone else having a problem like this.
