Gobble, Gobble....

Well, it's that time. You know the time I'm talking about. That long expanse between the end of deer season and the beginning of turkey season. Really too cold to fish much.

How do you spend this time getting ready for turkey? Practice calling? Suiting up in your camo and skulking about your house? Patterning your shotgun for the umpteenth time?

I think this year, I'm going to make some calls. I have quite a bit of teak and mahogany stashed back, and I've already made one nice paddle call. My uncle has begun experimenting with calls made from a single piece of wood. I may have to fire up the drill press, and see what I can come up with.

Here's a pic of the paddle call I made (before I stained it).

Thanks 5pt. That one, made of mahogany by the way, took a while because it is constructed from individual pieces that are glued together. It's a nice call though, and I've been tuning it to where it really "barks" out some yelps. I'm going to use it primarily as a locator. I suspect that the single-piece-of-wood calls will be easier and quicker to make.
