Talk me out of this...

I'm currently considering a Romanian PSL. Any thoughts? I am also considering handloading for the 7.62x54R for this particular weapon. I do not have a "Designated Marksman" rifle and I am particularly worried these will soon no longer be imported after the new interpretation by the BATF on importation of barrels and parts kits now must state their specific intended use for a desinated sporting rifle. (not to be reassembled into their original ,although neutered, form.) See below quote:

Importers were further advised that ATF has determined that the language of section 925(d)(3)
permits no exceptions that would allow the frames, receivers, or barrels for otherwise
nonimportable firearms to be imported into the United States. As a result, ATF would no longer
approve ATF Form 6 import permit applications for importation of any frames, receivers, or
barrels for firearms that would be prohibited from importation if assembled. No exceptions to
the statutory language, for example for the repair or replacement of existing firearms, will be
allowed.

I'd like to see a government link to that info, never heard of that. If true, WASRs and the like just tripled in price again, but, I have heard nothing about that at all.
As for the PSL, go for it, might be a fun project no matter what.

PSL is a cheap alternative to the much sought after SVD, I think it is a great rifle for the price and ability.

This is the link that I quoted before. Am I misinterpreting?

The only thing that I know about PSLs is I think that the are over-rated and overpriced...but that is just me. :)

The parts kit barrel ban has no effect on the importation of complete "sporting rifles". The PSL is built in Romania, not from parts kits in the U.S. (some had been built here in the past, but that's no longer the case).

WASRs are built as single stack "sporting rifles" by Cugir in Romania, then imported and modified here. Barrels and receivers are made by Cugir. However, the "GP 1975" rifles also floating around have barrels and receivers made in the U.S.

However, the "GP 1975" rifles also floating around have barrels and receivers made in the U.S.That is probably what I am thinking of, and now that I think about it the WASRs are stamped "made in Romania" (or something to that extent) so I do not doubt that you are right. The WASRs are their equivalent to the Saiga. :)
