i need a legit 800 fps load for a 5" barrel .45acp using RED DOT powder under a 230 gr. lead round nose. alliant claims this with 4 grains ( ? ), but i would like to hear your results if you have used this recipe or 1 close to it with RED DOT..many thanks

Ok, that load SOUNDS about right, but I have to ask why are you using Red Dot?

I used to use 3.5 grains under a 115-gr. 9mm slug and was getting around 1,100 fps, IIRC.

In my experience it is not really an ideal pistol powder.

Somebody gave me a pound of RED DOT a few years ago and I tried it in both .45acp and .38sp. I thought it was exceptionally dirty and never used it again. Quantrill

My Speer #10 manual for
45acp 230 gr LRN
4.7gr.=765 fps
5.1gr.=841 fps the same load for a 260 gr JHP=748 fps

Out of the hundreds of 45 progressive reloaders I sold I only recommended WW231

I will be on vacation for a month

I use 4.3Gr Red Dot with a 200 Grain SWC and get a very accurate load.

For a 230Gr LRN use 4.9 for around 800 FPS.
