Help, I have a Browning Blackpowder Rifle that I purchased new in 1980. I've carried it around with me for years and never had a problem with rust. I pulled it out for an inspection about three months ago and found it in mint condition. I placed it back in in the same storage contained, but when I pulled it out about three days ago I found a thin even coat of rust covering the original brown finished barrel. How do I overcome this problem and mitigate as much damage as possible.

Thanks,

Branchwalker

is what happened , bringing one peice of metal into a different temperature enviroment can creat moisture , condensation , rust , real quick like too.
Oil should cure your problems in the future once you kill the rust , keep um oiled well , don't store in cases that are tight to the weapon , gun sacks etc , . Rifle racks and gun cabinets are best , or safes with envirnmentally controlled systems or humidity controls . Dry airy rooms work very well .
Whats happeend is the Browning on the barrel has come to life again , you need to KILL it again .

If you're not going to shoot the gun, coat it with RIG or if you want professional quality stuff, Rennaisance Wax. Microcystelline in nature and PH neutral, Rennaisance Wax was developed by the British Museum and is used by museum conservators worldwide to protect wood, metal and even leather objects.

+1 for the Rennaisance Wax. I use it on everything I brown.

Treat the rust and then store it in a Kleenbore vapor inhibitor
plastic bag to help protect it from humidity and moisture.

You can always just take it out every so often and shoot it, then clean/re-oil. More fun that way.

Can you even freeze silicone w/o detrimental effects? I guess not!

Even RIG, as good as it is, can't save him.
